@U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken and South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yeol hold a press conference after their meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Seoul on the 6th.
@U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol shake hands during their final farewell visit to South Korea.

The US-ROK Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held on the 6th (Korean time) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Seoul. US Secretary of State Blinken and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol, who held the first foreign ministers’ meeting since the ‘December 3 martial law’ last year, emphasized the strong ROK-US alliance despite the political turmoil in South Korea during the meeting, and discussed various pending issues such as ROK-US-Japan cooperation and North Korea issues.

Secretary Blinken expressed particular concern about the possibility that Russia could transfer satellite technology to North Korea as relations between the two countries deepen.

On the U.S. side, Secretary Blinken was joined at the meeting by Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink, Spokesperson Matthew Miller, Advisor Tom Sullivan, and outgoing Ambassador to South Korea Philip Goldberg.

Perhaps because it was a farewell visit by Secretary Blinken, Minister Cho showed his friendliness by calling Secretary Blinken “Tony” during his welcoming remarks after taking his seat at the meeting room, showing the friendly feelings between Korea and the United States.

During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed the unchanged tone of strengthening the ROK-US alliance despite the impeachment situation in South Korea, while also evaluating the achievements of strengthening the ROK-US alliance and ROK-US-Japan cooperation during the Biden administration and emphasizing that this should be continued by the Trump administration.

The White House and the Pentagon previously stated that the ROK-US alliance will remain strong even after this administration.

This meeting is also seen as an opportunity to demonstrate to the world at home and abroad that South Korean diplomacy is functioning normally even amid the political turmoil caused by the 'December 3 martial law' and the subsequent impeachment.

Meanwhile, North Korea fired a new hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile from Pyongyang into the East Sea this morning. The exact details are currently being analyzed by South Korea and the United States.

Prior to the meeting, Secretary Blinken also paid a courtesy call on Acting President Choi Sang-mok, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance.

Secretary Blinken's visit to South Korea will be a farewell visit before the inauguration of the Donald Trump administration on the 20th. Secretary Blinken, who arrived in Korea on the night of the 5th, is scheduled to visit Japan and France until the 9th following his visit to South Korea.

I hope that Korea and the United States will continue to be eternal blood allies no matter which administration comes into power in the United States.
