@Q&A with a State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller and Janne Pak at the State Department Press Briefing on April 15, 2024.

On the 13th, Iran launched about 300 drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles targeting mainland Israel. Iran's retaliation against Israel was carried out on a large-scale airstrike 12 days after the bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, the capital of Syria, on the 1st, killing seven soldiers, including the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian claimed to ambassadors from various countries in Tehran on the 12th, “We have notified the United States and neighboring countries that we will carry out an operation 72 hours before the airstrike.”

호세인 아미르압돌라히안 이란 외무장관은 12일 테헤란 주재 각국 대사들에게 “미국과 주변국에 공습 72시간 전 작전을 할 것임을 통보했다”고 주장했다.

Regarding Iran's airstrikes against Israel, the U.S. State Department said, "We will continue to emphasize the importance of the international community acting as a united front to condemn this reckless escalation."

미 국무부는 이란의 이스라엘 공습에 대해 “우리는 이러한 무모한 확전 행위를 규탄하기 위해 국제사회가 단합된 전선으로 행동하는 것이 중요하다는 점을 계속해서 강조할 것이다.”고 밝혔다.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said at a regular briefing today (16th), “Of course, we continue to make clear to everyone that we talk to that we want to see de-escalation that we don't want to see this conflict further escalated. We don't want to see a wider regional war. That's something that's been the goal of this administration since October 7th and we have worked to achieve.”

매튜밀러 국무성 대변인은 오늘(16일) 정례 브리핑에서 “물론, 우리는 이 갈등이 더 이상 확대되는 것을 원치 않는다는 점을 대화하는 모든 이들에게 계속해서 분명히 밝히고 있다.” 면서 “우리는 더 큰 지역의 전쟁을 원치 않는다.” 그리고 “이것이 바로 지난해 10월 7일부터 현 (바이든) 행정부의 목표였으며 이를 달성하기 위해 우리는 노력해 왔다.”고 강조했다.

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): China’s standing committee chairman, Zhao Leji, met with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un last weekend and pledged to strengthen high-level exchanges between China and North Korea and build solidarity with anti-U.S. countries. My question is: Assistant Secretary Kritenbrink, currently visiting China – will he discuss these issues with his counterpart?

A:(MR MILLER): So certainly every time that we engage with our Chinese counterparts, whether it is the Secretary at his level or Assistant Secretary Kritenbrink at his, one of the things that is always on the agenda is stability on the Korean Peninsula and preventing North Korea from realizing its nuclear ambitions.
