@Q&A with a State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller and Janne Pak at the State Department Press Briefing on June 13, 2024.

Tensions between South Korea and North Korea are reaching a peak. North Korea is still sending trash balloons to South Korea. Meanwhile, on the 9th, several North Korean soldiers violated the Military Demarcation Line and fled north after receiving warning shots from the South Korean military.

한국과 북한의 긴장이 고조에 도달하고 있다. 북한은 여전히 쓰레기 풍선을 한국으로 날려 보내고 있다. 그런가하면 지난 9일에는 북한군 여러명이 군사분계선을 침범하였으며 한국군의 경고사격을 받고 북쪽으로 도주했다.

North Korea's waste balloons are flying all over South Korea, causing great damage to the people. The Korean government In response to North Korea's reckless and dangerous waste balloons, loudspeaker broadcasts to North Korea were resumed. North Korea resumed sending garbage balloons again, warning South Korea that it would pay hundreds of times the price. North Korea claims that these actions are legitimate actions of its own.

한국의 전역에 북한의 오물풍선이 날아와서 국민들의 피해가 이만저만이 아니다. 한국정부는

북한의 무모하고 위험한 오물풍선에 대응해서 대북 확성기 방송을 재개했다. 북한은 수백배의 대가를 치를것이라고 한국에 경고하면서 다시 오물풍선 보내기를 재개했다. 북한은 이런 행동이 자기들의 정당한 행위라고 주장하고 있다.

North Korea's waste balloons are even more dangerous because the North Korean military's biological and chemical units are in charge and give orders. Currently, they are only sending out trash balloons, but if North Korea, which is unpredictable, wants to, it can fill the balloons with as many bad content and send them to South Korea.

북한의 오물풍선은 북한군의 생.화학부대가 담당하고 명령을 내리고 있어 더욱 위험하다. 지금은 오물풍선만 날려 보내고 있지만 예측할수 없는 북한이 마음만 먹으면 얼마든지 나쁜 내용을 풍선에 담아 한국으로 날려 보낼수도 있다.

About 28,000 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea. What North Korea is targeting are also U.S. military units and South Korean military units. North Korea has always shown its intention to target U.S. troops stationed in South Korea.

한국에는 2만8천여명의 주한미군이 주둔하고 있다. 북한이 노리는 것 또한 미군부대와 한국군 부대이다. 북한은 늘 주한 미군을 타켓하려는 의도를 보여왔다.

At today's State Department briefing, Spokesperson Miller responded to my question by saying, “The North Korean military has violated the Military Demarcation Line and is engaging in dangerous actions such as sending out waste balloons again. 28,000 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea. In response to my question, “Do you consider South Korea’s resumption of loudspeaker broadcasts against North Korea from the Military Demarcation Line to be a justified action?” the spokesperson responded, “No, we continue to call on North Korea to halt these activities, and we’ll just reaffirm that our commitment to our South Korean allies is ironclad."

오늘 국무성 브리핑에서 밀러 대변인은 “북한군이 군사분계선을 침범했고 또다시 오물풍선을 날려보내는등 위험한 행동을 하고 있다. 한국에는 2만8천여명의 주한미군이 주둔하고 있다. 한국이 군사분계선에서 대북 확성기 방송을 재개한데 대한 정당한 행위라고 평가하느냐?”는 나의 질문에, 대변인은 “아니요, 우리는 북한에 이러한 활동을 중단할 것을 계속 촉구하고 있으며, 한국의 동맹국에 대한 우리의 약속이 확고하다는 점을 재확인할 것이다.”고 말했다.

In addition, to the question, “Has the United States made a diplomatically conveyed its complaint to China, regarding the recent stabbing of American professors by Chinese man in China?” he responded, “The Department of State and our embassies and consulates abroad have no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas. We are aware of the stabbing of three U.S. citizens and two other individuals in Jilin City in China on June 10th.

"We are providing all appropriate consular assistance. The U.S. consulate general – Shenyang’s consul general visited the U.S. citizen victims on June 12th, and a consular official – consular officers also visited on June 11th. We are in touch with local authorities and are closely monitoring the situation." he said.

또한 “최근 중국에서 미국인 교수들이 중국인에 의해 찔린사건에 대해 미국이 외교적으로 항의를 했느냐?“는 질문에는, ”국무부와 해외에 있는 우리 대사관과 영사관은 해외에 있는 미국 시민의 안전과 보안보다 더 우선시 되는게 있지 않습니다. 우리는 6월 10일 중국 지린시에서 미국 시민 3명과 다른 개인 2명이 칼에 찔린 사건을 알고 있다.“고 말했다.

그러면서 “우리는 모든 적절한 영사 지원을 제공하고 있다.“ 지난 6월 12일 미국 총영사관-선양 총영사가 미국 시민 피해자들을 방문했고, 6월 11일에는 미국 영사-영사관 직원도 방문했다. 우리는 현지 당국과 연락을 취하고 상황을 면밀히 모니터링하고 있다.”고 밝혔다.

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): On North Korea, North Korea continues to send dangerous trash balloons to South Korea, and the North Korean army invaded the military demarcation line. It is known that this act was under the direction of North Korea’s biological and chemical unit. As you know, the– 28,000 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea. Do you assess this as a justifiable response to South Korea’s resumption of loudspeakers broadcast against North Korea at the military demarcation line?
