@Q&A with a State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel and Janne Pak at the State Department Press Briefing on May 30, 2024.

North Korea is distributing about 260 "filth" balloons across South Korea every day. Additionally, they are carrying out provocations in a variety of ways, including disrupting GPS radio waves and launching about 10 ballistic missiles into the East Coast.

북한이 연일 오물풍선 260여개를 한국전역으로 살포하고 있다. 또한 GPS전파 교란과 탄도미사일 10여발을 동해상으로 발사하는 등 다양한 방식으로 도발을 감행하고 있다.

The South Korean government and the international community are angry at North Korea's unreasonable behavior. However, North Korea is escalating its provocations with China and Russia at its back.

북한의 비상식적인 행동에 한국 정부와 국제사회가 분노를 하고 있다. 하지만 북한은 중국과 러시아를 등에 업고 도발행위 수위를 높이고 있다.

It is regrettable that the UN Security Council appears to be ignoring North Korea's violations of the Security Council and is not taking strong measures. Since China and Russia are opposing sanctions against North Korea at the UN Security Council and are using veto, it seems that they are even more unable to use their power.

유엔안보리는 북한의 안보리 위반행위를 손 놓고 있는 듯 강력한 대책을 세우고 않고 있는 것이 유감이다. 중국과 러시아가 유엔안보리에서 대북 제재를 반대하고 비토를 사용하고 있기 때문에 더욱 힘을 쓰지 못하고 있는 것 같다.

North Korea's barbaric actions are expected to become more severe in the future, and we cannot just sit by and watch.

북한의 야만적인 행동은 앞으로 더욱 심해질 것으로 보이는데 보고만 있을 수는 없다.

Only if the UN Security Council makes North Korea pay for its dangerous actions in some form will North Korea no longer repeat its actions.

어떤 형태로든 UN안보리에서 북한의 위험한 행동에 대해 대가를 치르게 해야만이 북한이 더 이상 반복된 행동을 하지 않을 것이다.

Principal Deputy Spokesperson of the State Department, Vedant Patel, responded to my question on briefing today(30th) about the United States' position on North Korea's waste balloons, GPS radio interference, and ballistic missile launches, saying, he said "We strongly condemn this, and it violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions." and "It poses a threat to regional and international peace and security and undermines the world and security, namely the global non-proliferation regime." Patel also emphasized that he continues to urge North Korea to refrain from provocative actions and return to diplomacy.

파텔 국무성 부대변인은 오늘(30일) 브리핑에서 북한의 오물풍선과 지피에스 전파교란, 탄도미사일 발사등에 대한 미국의 입장을 묻는 나의질문에, “이를 강력히 규탄한다면서 이는 다수의 유엔 안전보장이사회 결의를 위반하는 것이다고 말했다. 그러면서 지역 및 국제 평화와 안보에 위협을 가하고 세계 및 안보, 즉 글로벌 비확산 체제를 약화시킨다고 말했다. 파텔 수석부대변인은 또한 북한이 도발적인 행동을 자제하고 외교로 복귀할 것을 계속 촉구한다고 강조했다.

Additionally, in response to the question, “How does the United States view China’s failure to play its role despite North Korea’s continued provocations?” he said, "We continue to believe that there are countries who have a relationship with the DPRK and have influence with the DPRK that have a responsibility to rein in and influence some of the malign and bad behavior that we are seeing, especially a country like the People’s Republic of China, which sits on the UN Security Council."

"When we’re talking about launches that are in violation of certain UN Security Council resolutions, it’s of course incredibly concerning." he said.

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): Thank you so much. About the North Koreans- I mean, balloons, about – North Korea distributed about 260 garbage balloons across South Korea. They are also attacking GPS radio waves, and have launched about 10 ballistic missiles into the East Sea. What can you say about North Korea continuing its provocation in various ways?

A:(MR PATEL): We continue to call on the DPRK to refrain from provocative actions and return to diplomacy. We condemn the DPRK’s May 29th ballistic missile launch, and these launches, like other ballistic missiles, are in violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions. They pose a threat to regional and international peace and security and undermine the global and security – the global nonproliferation regime. We’ll continue to consult closely with the Republic of Korea, Japan, and other allies and partners on how to best engage with the DPRK.
