@Q&A with a Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh and Janne Pak at the Pentagon Press Briefing on June 5, 2024.

The South Korean government announced on the 5th that it has decided to completely suspend the September 19 military agreement between South and North Korea as a response to North Korea, as civilians have suffered a lot of damage and are feeling threatened due to North Korea's recent garbage balloon provocations.

As a result, it is possible to resume reconnaissance activities such as military exercise  south of the Military Demarcation Line, which had been unable to do so due to the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement.

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense announced that it is preparing to resume loudspeaker broadcasting at any time at the Military Demarcation Line depending on the level of North Korea's provocations.

Meanwhile, South Korea's Ministry of National Defense announced that it would conduct large-scale shooting training at the end of this month and that it would further increase ROK-US training. By responding to North Korea with “a tooth for a tooth” and “an eye for an eye,” South Korea is demonstrating its firm will to put an end to North Korea’s wrongful provocations.

At the Pentagon briefing today, Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh responded to my question, “Does the United States agree with the U.S. position and the South Korean government’s decision to completely suspend the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement?”

The Deputy Press Secretary Singh said. “What I can tell you is, you know, we continue and always will consult with our partners in the region, like the Republic of Korea, like Japan. Obviously have continued to monitor the recent actions of the DPRK.” and "I just don't have anything to add on that front." she said.

*For more details, please See the Q&A from Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh and Janne Pak at the Pentagon Press Briefing on June 5, 2025.

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): Thank you, Sabrina. Two questions. As you know, due to various provocations, such as North Korea's recent trash balloons, the South Korean government decided to completely suspend the September 19 military agreement — I mean inter-Korean military agreement. And (inaudible) was sent to the United States and Japan allies. Do you agree with the South Korean government decision on that?

A:(MS. SINGH): Yeah, so I thanks, Janne, for the question. I don't really have anything to add onto that. What I can tell you is, you know, we continue and always will consult with our partners in the region, like the Republic of Korea, like Japan. Obviously have continued to monitor the recent actions of the DPRK, but I just don't have anything to add on that front.

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): Thank you. Another one. At the recent U.S. and ROK defense minister meeting at the Shangri-La Security Conference, Secretary Austin said that South Korea's support for nuclear-powered submarines is different from Australia's support for nuclear-powered submarines. South Korea and the U.S. — United States are allies. So why is the support different?

A:(MS. SINGH): Sorry, Janne, I'm not sure that I fully captured the quote on that exactly. I think you're paraphrasing some of the words that the Secretary used. You know, we continue to work with our partners in the Indo-Pacific.

In terms of what the Secretary said, I don't have anything additional to add, so I'm just going to let his comments stand for what they were.
