@President Trump and Acting President of South Korea Han Duck-soo had their first phone call on the 8th.(April 8, 2025)

President Trump and Acting President Han Duck-soo had their first phone call since the inauguration of the second Trump administration on the 8th (local time). The call lasted about 30 minutes and discussed trade, shipbuilding, and North Korea.

트럼프 대통령과 한덕수 대통령 대행이 8일(현지시간) 트럼프 2기 행정부 출범이후 첫 통화를 가졌다. 통화는 약 30분간 진행되었고 무역, 조선업, 북한문제등이 논의되었다.

Today (the 9th), President Trump increased tariffs on China by 104% on the day when reciprocal tariffs actually begin for each country. He also warned that if China continues to retaliate, he will increase the tariffs to 125%.

오늘(9일) 트럼프 대통령은 각 국가에게 실제로 상호관세가 시작되는날, 중국에 대해 104%의 관세 증액을 했다. 그리고 중국이 계속 보복을 시행하고 있다면 125%까지 올릴것이라고 경고했다.

President Trump is giving 70 countries and allies South Korea and Japan 90 days to negotiate tariffs.

트럼프 대통령은 70여개국들과 동맹국인 한국과 일본에는 90일간의 여유를 주면서 관세에 대한 협상의 여지를 남기고 있다.

Ultimately, it is a warning that tariffs will be raised mercilessly on countries that oppose the United States.

결국 미국에 맞서 대항하는 나라에 대해서는 가차없이 관세를 올릴것이라는 경고이다.

China is reaching out to countries that would counter the U.S. with tariffs to get on its side.

중국은 관세에 대해 미국에 맞대응 할 나라들을 자기편으로 만들기 위해 손을 내밀고 있다.

President Trump, while signing an executive order in the Oval Office today (9th), announced his intention to comprehensively negotiate an increase in South Korea's defense cost sharing and reciprocal tariffs.

트럼프 대통령은 오늘(9일) 오발 오피스에서 행정명령에 싸인을 하는중 한국의 방위비 분담금 증액과 상호관세를 포괄적으로 협상하겠다는 의지를 밝혔다.

Earlier, after a phone call with the acting president, President Trump mentioned that “one-stop shopping is a beautiful and efficient process.” One-stop shopping is a “one-stop shopping” that discusses tariffs, defense cost sharing, resolving the trade deficit, LNG exports, Alaskan joint ventures, and shipbuilding cooperation. He wants a kind of “package deal” that deals with not only trade and tariffs but also security issues at once.

앞서 트럼프 대통령은 한 권한대행과의 통화 이후 "'원스톱 쇼핑'은 아름답고 효율적인 과정"이라고 언급하기도 했다. 원스톱 쇼핑은 관세와 방위비 분담금, 무역적자 해소, LNG 수출, 알래스카 합작투자, 조선업 협력 등을 하나로 묶어 논의한다는 “원스톱 쇼핑”으로 무역과 관세 뿐만아니라 안보현안을 한꺼번에 다루는 일종의 '패키지 딜'을 원하고 있다.

“We pay for the cost of stationing American troops in Europe, but we don’t get much in return, and it’s the same for South Korea,” Trump said. “It has nothing to do with trade, but it makes sense to do it as part of the negotiations. I think it would be good to put it together as one package for each country.”

트럼프 대통령은 “우리는 유럽에 주둔 미군 비용을 내지만 많이 보전받지 못하고 있고 이건 한국도 마찬가지이다.”며 “무역과는 관계가 없지만, 협상의 일부로 하는 게 합리적이다. 각 국가별로 하나의 패키지로 묶으면 좋을 것 같다.”고 말했다.

As for the increase in defense cost sharing, it was already expected, so we will have to wait and see how the negotiations between Korea and the US will proceed flexibly.

방위비 분담금 증액에 관해서는 이미 예상했던 일이라 앞으로 한미간의 협상이 어떻게 유연성있게 진행될지 지켜봐야 한다.(끝)
