“Will the possibility of North Korea's 7th nuclear test increase its negotiating power with the U.S.?_U.S. wants denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula”

As the U.S. presidential election approaches, there are concerns about changes in the international situation. In particular, there are growing concerns that North Korea will use this as an opportunity to play around with nuclear weapons.

In an interview with Bloomberg News on the 28th, South Korean Minister of National Defense Shin Won-sik said, “North Korea is fully prepared to conduct a nuclear test if it decides to do so,” adding, “We are ruling out the possibility that this decision will be made around the U.S. presidential election in order to increase our negotiating power with the U.S.” he said.

신원식 한국 국방부 장관은 지난 28일 ‘블룸버그’ 통신과의 인터뷰에서 “북한은 결단만 내리면 가능하도록 핵실험 준비를 마친 상태”라며 “대미 협상력을 높이기 위해 이 결정이 미국 대선을 전후해 이뤄질 가능성을 배제할 수 없다”고 말했었다.

The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced that it will continue to monitor the possibility of North Korea's seventh nuclear test around the U.S. presidential election in November. “These nuclear tests are extremely destabilizing in the region,” he said, adding, “We want the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

미 국방부(펜타곤)는 오는 11월 미국 대선을 전후한 북한의 7차 핵실험 가능성과 관련해 계속 주시할 것이라는 입장을 밝혔다. 그러면서 “이러한 핵실험은 역내를 극도로 불안정하게 만든다.”며 “우리는 한반도의 비핵화를 원한다.”고 밝혔다.

Sabrina Singh, Deputy Press Secretary for the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon), said at the Pentagon's regular briefing on the 2nd, responded to my question, "the South Korean Minister of Defense's recent mention of the possibility that the North Korean regime will push ahead with its seventh nuclear test before or after the U.S. presidential election, the possibility of North Korea's interfering in the U.S. presidential election."

She said, “These tests are extremely destabilizing to the region and we want to see the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” “This is something we will continue to monitor.” “This is something we will always have to coordinate with our allies in Korea and Japan, but we will continue to monitor any tests like this because they are incredibly destabilizing to the region.”

Deputy Press Secretary Singh also added, “Secretary of Defense Austin held a historic trilateral meeting in Tokyo with the Ministers of Defense of South Korea and Japan, and the North Korean issue was discussed throughout the meeting.”

South Korea's defense minister said recently there was a possibility that North Korea would conduct its seventh nuclear test before or after the U.S. Presidential election. What do you think about the possibility of North Korea interfering in the U.S. Presidential election?

On the Secretary's trip to the Indo-Pacific, as I mentioned at the top, you know, he held a historic trilateral meeting in Tokyo with the Minister of Defense from Korea and the Japanese Foreign Minister.

It's something that we're going to continue to monitor. It's something that we'll always work with our ROK and Japanese allies and in coordinating on, but any tests like that are incredibly destabilizing to the region and we'll continue to monitor.

The scale of the U.S. nuclear posture must be changed -- I mean, adjusted. Do you think it is possible to increase nuclear assets in South Korea?

A:(MS. SINGH): No. I mean, I would sorry, I shouldn't have been so direct. I haven't seen all of his comments. Certainly, what we want to see is a -- a denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The Secretary, while in Tokyo, made a number of announcements that I'm sure you're tracking on the upgrade of US Forces Japan to a unified command.
