The Korean Central News Agency reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un recently visited the North Korean National Defense Academy's Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Research Institute and provided local guidance on a strike test of a recently developed unmanned aerial vehicle and ordered the deployment of all-out troops for actual combat as soon as possible.

북한의 리더 김정은이 최근 북한 국방관학원 무인기 연구소를 방문해 최근 개발한 무인기의 타격 시험을 현지지도 하면서 빠른시일내에 실전을 위해 전면 부대 배치를 지시했다고 ‘조선중앙통신’이 보도했다.

Kim Jong-un ordered that more strategic reconnaissance and multi-purpose attack drones, as well as various types of suicide-type drones, be developed and produced. It is assessed that if a large number of self-destructive drones, which were revealed for the first time, are sent to South Korea, it could be fatal as it could neutralize Korea's missile defense network.

김정은은 전략정찰 및 다목적 공격형 무인기 뿐만 아니라 각종 자폭형 무인기들도 더 많이 개발 생산해야 한다고 지시했다. 처음으로 공개한 자폭형 무인기를 대량으로 남한으로 보낼 경우 한국의 미사일 방어망을 무력화 시킬수 있어 치명적일 수 있다는 평가다.

American experts are concerned that ‘suicide drones’, which were developed at a lower cost than missiles, could threaten the ROK-U.S. missile defense and air defense networks. Additionally, it is pointed out that if North Korea received technical support from Russia and Iran to manufacture and export finished drones in large quantities, threats from Ukraine and the Middle East cannot be ruled out.

미국의 전문가들은 미사일 보다 저렴한 비용으로 개발된 ‘자폭용 무인기’는 한미 미사일 방어와 방공망을 위협할수 있다고 우려하고 있다. 또한 북한이 러시아와 이란으로부터 기술을 지원받아 무인기 완제품을 만들어 대량 생산 수출한 경우 우크라이나와 중동지역의 위협도 배제할수 없다는 지적이다.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced that it is taking seriously the threat of North Korea's full-scale deployment of suicide drones. He also stated that he is cooperating with allies and partners to prepare for all threats posed by North Korea.

미 국방부는 북한의 자폭 드론 전면배치에 대해 그 위협을 심각하게 받아들이고 있다고 밝혔다. 그러면서 북한이 가하는 모든 위협에 대비하기 위해 동맹국 및 파트너들과 협력하고 있다고 밝혔다.

At a regular briefing held today (27th), U.S. Department of Defense(Pentagon) Press Secretary General Patrick Ryder responded to my question, “What are the concerns about North Korea’s deployment of ‘suicide drones’ and what is the United States’ response to North Korea’s asymmetric power in the future?” he said, “We certainly want to take that threat seriously and will continue to monitor it.” “We will continue to consult closely with South Korea, Japan, and other partners and allies in the region to ensure that our common defense remains strong,”

He added, “North Korea has a long history of destabilizing rhetoric and activities,” “Our focus in the region is defensive in nature, and I am committed to promoting regional security and stability and preparing for any threats posed by North Korea.” “We are working with our allies and partners to do this,”

국방부(펜타곤) 대변인 패트릭 라이더 장군은 오늘(27일) 정례 브리핑에서 “북한의 ‘자살드론’배치에 대해 어떤 우려가 되고 있으며, 앞으로 북한의 비대칭전력에 대한 미국의 대응책이 무엇이냐?”는 나의 질문에 그는“우리는 분명히 그 위협을 심각하게 받아들이고 싶고 계속 주시할 것이다.”고 말했다. 그러면서 “우리의 공동방위가 강력하게 유지될 수 있도록 한국과 일본, 그리고 역내 다른 파트너 및 동맹국들과 계속해서 긴밀히 협의해 나갈 것이다.”고 말했다.

Meanwhile, when asked, "Can you predict the possibility that suicide drones mass-produced with technical assistance from Russia and Iran will be used on battlefields in Ukraine and the Middle East?" he said, "I don't have anything on that, nor do I want to predict.“

한편 러시아와 이란의 기술 지원을 받아 대량 생산된 자살 드론이 우크라이나와 중동의 전장에서 사용될 가능성을 예측할 수 있는냐?“는 질문에는, ”나는 그것에 대해 아무것도 모르며 예측하고 싶지도 않다.“고 말했다.

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): Thank you, General, two questions. North Korean Kim Jong Un announced that it would fully deploy suicide drones for the war. What concerns does the United States have about this, and what is the US response to North Korea's asymmetric power?

A:(MAJOR GENERAL RYDER): On your first question, I've seen the press reporting. Certainly it's something that we're keeping an eye on. I do find it interesting that everywhere else it's known as one-way attack drone. But for some reason when North Korea says it, it's suicide drone, interesting. But we clearly want to take that threat seriously and it's something that we'll keep an eye on.

I know that our South Korean allies are also keeping an eye on it and monitoring that. And I'll just conclude by saying that we will continue to consult closely with the ROK and Japan and other partners and allies in the region to ensure that our collective defense remains strong.

In terms of North Korea and its capabilities, look, they have a long history here of destabilizing rhetoric and activities. Again, our focus in the region is defensive in nature, and I'm working with allies and partners to promote regional security and stability and to be prepared for any threats that North Korea presents.

Obviously, don't want conflict with North Korea and we continue to call for diplomatic communication, but so far, they have not been willing to take that olive branch.
