@Q&A with a State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce and Janne Pak at the State Department Press Briefing on June 3, 2025.

On the 3rd (local time), the U.S. State Department issued a statement regarding the South Korean presidential election, saying, “The United States and the Republic of Korea share an ironclad commitment to the Alliance grounded in our Mutual Defense Treaty, shared values, and deep economic ties.” “We are also modernizing the Alliance to meet the demands of today’s strategic environment and address new economic challenges.”

미 국무성은 3일(현지시간) 한국 대통령 선거에 대해, 성명을 통해 “이재명 대통령 당선을 축하한다.”면서 “한미 양국은 상호방위조약, 공동의 가치, 그리고 굳건한 경제적 유대를 바탕으로 한미 동맹에 대한 확고한 의지를 공유하고 있다”며 “또한, 우리는 오늘날의 전략적 환경의 요구에 부응하고 새로운 경제적 도전에 대처하기 위해 한미 동맹을 현대화하고 있다.”고 밝혔다.

“We will also continue to deepen U.S.-Japan-ROK trilateral cooperation to bolster regional security, enhance economic resilience, and defend our shared democratic principles.”

그러면서 “또한 우리는 지역 안보를 강화하고, 경제적 회복력을 강화하며, 우리가 공유하는 민주주의 원칙을 수호하기 위해 미국-일본-한국 3자 협력을 계속 심화해 나갈 것이다.”고 밝혔다. .

Earlier, South Korea held a presidential election from 6 AM to 8 PM on the 3rd, and Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party was elected president.

앞서 한국은 3일 오전 6시부터 오후 8시까지 대통령을 뽑는 선거를 시행한 결과 민주당소속인 이재명이 대통령에 당선됐다.

This election was held approximately two months after former President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law on December 3 last year and was impeached from office by the Constitutional Court on April 3 this year.

이번 선거는 지난해 12월3일 윤석열 전대통령이 개엄을 하면서 올해 4월 3일 헌법재판소에서 대통령직이 파면되는 선고를 받은후 약 2달만에 치러진 선거였다.

However, many Koreans were afraid of Lee Jae-myung being elected president. This is because Lee Jae-myung has consistently been pro-North Korea, pro-China, and anti-American, and is currently under arrest for various crimes and is currently on trial for five more, so he is not qualified to be the president of Korea. This kind of person performing the duties of president makes the people anxious.

하지만 많은 한국인들은 이재명이 대통령에 당선되는 것을 두려워하고 있었다. 왜냐면 이재명은 친북,친중, 반미를 지속적으로 해 왔고 각종 범죄에 억류되어있고 현재도 5개의 재판이 진행되고 있기 때문에 한국 대통령으로서의 자격이 없다는 것이다. 이런 인물이 대통령직을 수행하는 것은 국민들을 불안하게 하기 때문이다.

Amidst these concerns, I wonder how Lee Jae-myung was elected. Many Korean citizens have been concerned about this election because the opposition Democratic Party has been guilty of election fraud in the past.

이런 우려 가운데도 이재명이 어떻게 당선이 되었는지 그것이 궁금하다. 많은 한국시민들은 야당인 민주당이 과거 부정선거를 일삼아 왔기 때문에 이번 선거도 우려해 왔던 것이다.

We must pay close attention to how Lee Jae-myung, who has advocated pro-China policies, will maintain the South Korea-U.S. alliance.

친중을 주장해 온 이재명이 한미동맹관계를 어떻게 유지해 나갈 것인지 주의깊게 봐야한다.

The president should be welcomed with the support of the entire nation, but it is disappointing that this is not the case.

대통령이란 온 국민의 지지속에 환영받아야 하는데 그렇지 못해서 씁쓸할 뿐이다.

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): The election on South Korea. As an ally of South Korea, what does the United States view about this Korean presidential election? And do you think the president elected in this election will be able to improve U.S. and South Korea relations? Thank you.
