@Q&A with a Pentagon Press Secretary General Pat Ryder and Janne Pak at the Pentagon Press Briefing on October 17, 2024.

Russia has recently been pouring out harsh criticism towards South Korea, claiming that South Korea carried out a drone provocation against Pyongyang. Meanwhile, Russia submitted a bill to the House of Representatives ratifying the North Korea-Russia Mutual Military Cooperation Treaty and declared that it would provide military support in case of conflict between North and South Korea. Russia has revealed its intention to intervene militarily in the event of an emergency on the Korean Peninsula.

러시아는 최근 한국이 평양에 드론을 투입했다면서 한국을 향해 맹 비난을 쏟아내고 있다. 그런가하면 러시아는 북-러 상호군사협력조약을 비준하는 법안을 하원에 제출하고, 남북이 충돌할 경우 군사지원을 하겠다고 선언했다. 한반도 유사시 러시아가 군사적 개입을 할 의도를 밝히고 있다,

At a briefing on the 17th (local time), the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) responded to my question, “How does the U.S. view Russia’s direct involvement in the inter-Korean conflict?” to which Press Secretary General Ryder responded, “We're going to continue to work closely with our ROK allies to support their defense.”

미 국방부(펜타곤)는 17일(현지시간) 브리핑에서 “러시아가 남북한 갈등에 직접 개입하는 것을 미국은 어떻게 보고 있느냐?”는 나의 질문에 “우리가 한국의 동맹국들의 방어를 지원하기 위해 계속해서 긴밀히 협력할 것이다.”고 대변인 라이더 장군이 밝혔다.

Also, “regarding the recent deployment of North Korean troops to Russia to participate in the war in Ukraine, this will not only delay the war in Ukraine but also increase military tensions on the Korean Peninsula. What is the United States' response to this?”

“Definitely seen the reporting on the comments about potential DPRK forces going to Russia or going to Ukraine. I can tell you right now we're looking into those. We can't confirm or corroborate those reports.” “If true, that would demonstrate an increase in the cooperation between Russia and North Korea.”

And “I think that would also demonstrate the situation that Russia finds itself in, the dire situation that it finds itself in, in terms of its forces on the battlefield. As you've heard us recently say, the casualties that Russia is experiencing on the front lines are extremely significant, upwards of 600,000 killed or wounded.”

added “so it just demonstrates the desperation in terms of identifying additional forces for their military, but it's something that will continue to keep a close eye on.”

“잠재적인 북한군이 러시아로 가거나 우크라이나로 갈 것이라는 언급에 대한 보도를 확실히 보았다.”며 “지금 당장 우리가 그 문제를 조사하고 있다고 말할수 있지만, 우리는 해당 보고서를 확인하거나 확증할 수 없다.”면서 “만약 사실이라면, 이는 러시아와 북한 간의 협력이 증가했음을 보여주는 것이다.”고 밝혔다.

The White House and the State Department also mentioned the possibility that Russia may request support for the North Korean military out of desperation as it is suffering many casualties in the war.

미 백악관과 국무성에서도 러시아가 전쟁에서 많은 사상자를 내고 있어 절박한 심정으로 북한군을지원을 요청할수 있다는 가능성을 언급했다.

Russia took North Korea's side and criticized South Korea for carrying out drone provocations in Pyongyang. How does the United States view Russia's direct intervention in the South and North Korea's conflict?

If that happens, not only will the war in Ukraine be delayed, but military tensions on the Korean peninsula will increase. What is the United States response to this?
