The White House announced in a briefing on the 1st that three Americans, one permanent resident, and five Germans, including Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reporter Evan Gersikovich, former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan, and Radio Free Europe (RFE) reporter Alsu Kurmasheva. , said 16 people, including 7 Russians, had been released.

Most of these people were with Russian anti-government activist Alexei Navalny, who died in prison.

미 백악관은 1일 브리핑을 통해 월스트리트저널(WSJ) 기자 에반 게르시코비치를 포함해 미국 해병대 출신 폴 휠런, 자유유럽방송(RFE) 기자 알수 쿠르마셰바 등 3명의 미국인과 1명의 영주권자, 5명의 독일인, 7명의 러시아인 등 16명이 석방됐다고 밝혔다.

이들 대부분은 수감 중 사망한 러시아 반정부 운동가 알렉세이 나발니와 함께했던 인사들이다.

Looking at the nationalities of those released, there are 8 Russian nationals, including Russian anti-government figure Vladimir Kara-Murza, 3 Americans, 2 Slovenes, 1 Norwegian, 1 German, and 1 Polish national. Among them is assassin Vadim Krasikov, who is serving a life sentence in Germany. It is known that Russian President Vladimir Putin has personally promoted the exchange of Krasikov.

석방자들의 국적을 보면 러시아 반정부 인사 블라디미르 카라-무르자등 8명의 러시아 국적자와 미국 3명, 슬로베니아 2명, 노르웨이 1명, 독일 1명, 폴란드 1명등이다. 이들 중에는 독일에서 종신형을 선고받고 복역 중인 암살자 바딤 크라시코프도 있다. 크라시코프는 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령이 직접 교환을 추진해 온 것으로 알려졌다.

Going back to the story, President Biden had a phone call with Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golov at his villa in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, USA, on the 21st of last month. It was for the release of Russian prisoners imprisoned in Slovenia. In order to exchange Russian prisoners in the West for Western prisoners in Russia, including in the United States, Prime Minister Golov had to be persuaded. It was part of a diplomatic gamble to exchange prisoners.

National Security Advisor Sullivan, who had been forced to deliver only negative news to the families of prisoners for years, was so overcome with emotion in the briefing room that he even had tears in his eyes.

It was reported that National Security Advisor Sullivan stayed in Colorado to attend the Aspen Strategic Group meeting on the 20th of last month and worked to reach a conclusion to negotiations over the phone.

Deciding that he could not directly persuade the Slovenian side to exchange WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovic, who was detained in the Balkan country, and two other Russians detained in Moscow, Russia, he asked if he could arrange a phone call with Prime Minister Golov. Afterwards, National Security Advisor Sullivan returned to Washington and made a phone call between President Biden and Prime Minister Golov through the White House Situation Room at home.

President Biden welcomed the exchange of Western-Russian prisoners, saying that 'the darkest day of my term has turned into a joyous day.'

At the White House State Dining Room, President Biden hugged a daughter of an inmate and said, “Family is the beginning, the middle, and the end. The blood of my blood. “It’s a bone in my bones.”
