"Trump, Zelenskyy, and European leaders meet at the White House: "We will see a resolution to the Ukraine war within 1-2 weeks!"

President Trump held a meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and other European and NATO leaders at the White House today (the 18th, local time).

트럼프 대통령은 오늘(18일, 현지시간) 백악관에서 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령을 비롯해 유럽과 나토(NATO) 지도자들과 함께 회담을 가졌다.

This meeting was reportedly decided by President Trump, reflecting President Zelenskyy's view that it was important for both the United States and Europe to participate in the ongoing peace talks.

이번 회의는 현재 진행중인 평화협상에 미국과 유럽이 모두 참여하는 것이 중요하다는 젤렌스키 대통령의 의중을 반영해 트럼프 대통령이 결정한 것으로  알려졌다.

President Zelenskyy said he supports two-party peace talks and three-party talks involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine.

젤렌스키 대통령은 평화협상에 2자회담과 미국과 러시아, 우크라이나가 참여하는 3자회담을 지지한다고 말했다.

At this meeting, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Finnish President Alexander Stubb were all in attendance.

이번 회담에는,  NATO 사무총장 마크 뤼터, 유럽연합 집행위원회 위원장 우르줄라 폰 데어 라이엔, 프랑스 대통령 에마뉘엘 마크롱, 영국 총리 키어 스타머, 독일 총리 프리드리히 메르츠, 이탈리아 총리 조르지아 멜로니, 핀란드 대통령 알렉산더 스투브 등이 모두 참석했다.

last Friday, President Trump and President Putin of Russia met for the first time in six years. They discussed what it will take to stop Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy was not at their meeting in Alaska last week.

지난 금요일, 트럼프 대통령과 푸틴 러시아 대통령은 6년 만에 처음으로 알래스카주에서만났다. 두 사람은 우크라이나에서 진행 중인 러시아의 전쟁을 중단시키기 위해 무엇 필요한지 논의했다. 젤렌스키 대통령은 지난주 알래스카에서 열린 두 정상회담에 참석하지 않았다.

“I think there are two parties that want to make a deal,” Trump said during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders. “They want to make a deal, they’re going to work together, and we’ll see if it’s possible.” he said.

트럼프 대통령은 이날 볼로디미르 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령, 유럽 정상들과 회담에서 “나는 합의를 원하고 있는 두 당사자가 있다고 본다”면서 “두 당사자가 합의를 원하고 있고, 함께 노력 할 것이며, 가능할지 살펴 볼것”이라고 말했다.

President Trump also emphasized, "It may be impossible, but if it were possible, it would save thousands, tens of thousands of lives every week."

트럼프 대통령은 또한 "불가능할 수도 있지만, 가능하다면 매주 수천, 수만 명의 생명을 구할 수 있다"고 강조했다.

President Zelenskyy and President Trump said that if a trilateral meeting were to take place, the Ukrainian territorial issue would be discussed there.

젤렌스키 대통령과 트럼프 대통령은 3자 회담이 성사 할 경우, 해당 자리에서 우크라이나 영토 문제가 논의될 것이라고 말했다.

"It is very important that sensitive issues and territorial issues will be discussed at the level of the leaders in the trilateral talks," Zelenskyy said. "President Trump will try to arrange such a meeting."he said.

젤렌스키 대통령은 "매우 중요한 점은, 민감한 사항과 영토 문제 등은 3자 회담에서 정상들 수준에서 논의할 것"이라며 "트럼프 대통령이 그러한 회담을 주선하려고 할 것"이라고 말했다.

President Trump also said, "We need to discuss the possibility of a territorial exchange that takes into account the current frontline, that is, the war zone," and explained, "We need to have discussions about this with President Putin as well."

트럼프 대통령도 "현재 전선을, 즉 전쟁 지역을 고려한 영토 교환 가능성도 논의해야 한다"면서 "푸틴 대통령과도 이와 관련된 논의를 해야 한다"고 설명했다.

"Sooner or later, not too long from now, within a week or two, we'll know whether we can solve this problem or whether this is going to be a terrible battle," President Trump said.

트럼프 대통령은 "조만간, 멀지 않은 시점, 1~2주 이내에 우리가 이 문제를 해결할 수 있을지, 아니면 끔찍한 전투가 계속될지 알게 될 것"이라고 말했다.
President Trump then expressed his expectations, saying, "We will try to have a three-way meeting as quickly as possible," and "I think President Zelenskyy and President Putin will come to some kind of agreement."

트럼프 대통령은 이어 "가능한 한 빠르게 3자 회담을 시도할 것"이라며 "나는 젤렌스키 대통령과 푸틴 대통령이 어떤 합의를 이룰 것이라는 생각이 든다"고 기대감을 내비쳤다.

The two leaders also discussed security guarantees to deter future war. President Zelenskyy stated, "Ukraine's security depends on the United States, you, and the leaders who have joined us in spirit." He added, "Many countries are on Ukraine's side, and our people and everyone want to end this war, stop Russia, and stop the war."

두 정상은 향후 전쟁 억제를 위한 안보 보장 문제에 관해서도 이야기했다.  젤렌스키 대통령은 "우크라이나 안보는 미국과 여러분, 그리고 마음속으로 함께 한 정상들에게 달려 있다"면서 "많은 나라가 우크라이나 편에 있으며, 우리 국민과 모두가 이 전쟁을 끝내고 러시아를 막고, 전쟁을 멈추길 원한다"고 말했다.

He  emphasized , "We discussed this, and we will talk more about security guarantees," he said, adding, "It is very important that the United States sends a strong signal and is prepared to provide security guarantees."

그러면서 "이에 대해 논의했고, 안보 보장에 대해서도 더 이야기할 것"이라며 "미국이 강력한 신호를 주고, 안보 보장에 준비가 돼 있다는 것은 매우 중요하다"고 강조했다.

President Trump also said, "I'm optimistic that we can reach a joint agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine," adding, "I think we can deter future attacks on Ukraine, and I think they will be very unlikely."

트럼프 대통령도 우크라이나 안보 보장 관련 "우리는 공동으로 합의에 도달할 수 있다고 낙관한다"면서 "미래의 우크라이나 공격을 억제할 수 있을 것이고, 실제로 그런 공격은 거의 없을 것이라고 생각한다"고 말했다.

"The European countries will shoulder a lot of the burden, and we will help them and make it very safe," he said.

그러면서 "유럽 국가들이 많은 부담을 떠안을 것이고, 우리는 그들을 도울 것이며, 매우 안전하게 만들 것"이라고 했다.
"If a good meeting happens, I will arrange a meeting with President Putin," Trump said. "I can attend that meeting if he wants to. A lot of people are dying. We have to save them."

트럼프 대통령은 "좋은 회담이 이뤄진다면 내가 푸틴 대통령과 회담을 주선할 것"이라며 "원한다면 내가 그 회의에도 참석할 수 있다. 많은 사람이 죽고 있다. 우리는 그들을 구해야 한다"고 말했다.

President Trump also left open the possibility of a ceasefire in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Of course, the focus was on a peace treaty, a permanent end to the conflict.

트럼프 대통령은 러시아와 우크라이나 전쟁의 휴전 가능성도 여전히 열어놨다. 물론, 무게추는 영구적인 전쟁 종식인 평화협정에 쏠려 있었다.

"We would all have hoped for an immediate ceasefire during a period of sustained peace," Trump said. "Maybe that could happen now, at this very moment, but it's not happening right now."

트럼프 대통령은 "우리는 모두 지속적인 평화를 위해 노력하는 기간에 즉각적인 휴전을 바랐을 것"이라며 "어쩌면 지금, 이 순간에도 그런 일이 일어날 수 있겠지만, 현재로서는 일어나지 않고 있다"고 말했다.

"But President Zelenskyy and President Putin can discuss that a little more," he said, emphasizing that the six wars he has mediated have led directly to peace agreements without ceasefires.

"그러나 젤렌스키 대통령과 푸틴 대통령이 그 문제에 대해 조금 더 논의할 수 있다"면서도 자신이 중재한 6개의 전쟁이 휴전 없이 바로 평화협정으로 이어졌다는 점을 강조했다.

"I hope that there will be a ceasefire until the next meeting," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said, adding that "I cannot imagine that the next meeting will proceed without a ceasefire," as European leaders stressed the need for a ceasefire.

 *프리드리히 메르츠 독일 총리는 "다음 회의까지 휴전이 이뤄지길 바란다"며 "다음 회의가 휴전 없이 진행될 것이라고는 상상할 수 없다"고 말하면서 유럽정상들은 휴전의 필요성을 강조했다.  

Chancellor Merz said, "We need to put pressure on Russia," and suggested, "If there is to be any credible effort, there needs to be a ceasefire at the very beginning. I hope that a ceasefire will be reached at the trilateral talks."

*메르츠 총리는 "러시아에 압력을 가해야 한다"면서 "신뢰성 있는 노력이 있으려면 최소한 시작부터 휴전이 필요하다. 3자 회담에서 휴전이 이뤄지기를 바란다"고 제안했다.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy received a barrage of criticism from President Trump during their White House meeting in February, but this meeting was cordial, and his attire was striking, with a cautious change from his combat fatigues to a black suit.

한편 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령은 지난 2월 백악관 회담에서 트럼프 대통령으로 부터 엄청난 비난을 받았으나, 이번 회담은 화기애애했으며, 그의 복장도 전투복 차림에서 검정색 양복차림으로 조심스럽게 회담에 임한것이 인상적이다.

*Watching the Ukraine peace talks, the impending peace talks on the Korean Peninsula overlap with them.

우크라이나 평화협상을 위한 회담을 지켜 보면서 언젠가 닥아올  한반도 평화협상이 오버랩 되어진다.

*The Korean Peninsula issue also feels unusual, given the type of negotiations President Trump is considering with North Korea and the reactions of neighboring countries.

앞으로 북한과 어떤형태의 협상을 트럼프 대통령이 궁리하고 있을지, 그리고 주변 국가들은 어떤 반응을 하고 나올지 한반도 이슈도 예사롭지 않게 느껴진다.(끝)
