"Trump-Putin Summit: Could North Korean Troops Continue to Station in Russia Concern Ending the Russia-Ukraine War?"

[트럼프 ,푸딘 회담: 북한군 러시아에 계속 주둔 쟁점화 될수있나?]

@Q&A with a State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce and Janne Pak at the State Department Press Briefing on August 12, 2025.

President Trump will hold a summit with Russian President Putin in Alaska, a U.S. territory, on May 15. Putin's meeting with President Trump on U.S. soil carries significant significance.

트럼프 대통령은 오는 15 미국 영토인 알라스카에서 러시아의 푸틴 대통령과 정상회담을 갖는다.  푸틴이 트럼프 대통령과 미국 영토 안에서 회담을 갖는것은 그 의미가 크다.

It would be unusual to hold a summit on U.S. soil, especially since Russia is under U.S. sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine.

특히 러시아가 우크라이나를 침공한 이후 미국의 제재를 받고 있는 만큼 미국 영토내에서 정상회담을 갖는것은 이례적인 일이다.

Russia, which is scheduled to meet with President Trump, is carrying out airstrikes against Ukraine today, and attention is focused on what issues will be discussed at the upcoming summit between the US and Russia.

트럼프 대통령과 회담을 앞둔 러시아는 오늘도 우크라이나를 향해 공습을 감행하고 있어 이번 미-러 정상간의 회담에서 어떤 이슈들이 논의 될지 주목된다.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has recently asserted that ceasefire and armistice talks between the US and Russia, excluding Ukraine, are impossible. He insists that the US, Russia, and Ukraine should sit down at the negotiating table and discuss the issue together.

젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령은 최근 우크라이나를 제외한 미-러간의 종전, 휴전협상은 있을수 없다고 반박하고 있다.  미-러-우크라이나, 3자가 함께 협상 테이블에 앉아서 논의해야 된다고 주장하고 있다.

White House Press Secretary David Levitt also said at a White House briefing today that Zelenskyy will not be attending the upcoming US-Russia summit, adding, "It will simply be a listening exercise." He hinted at a possible trilateral meeting in the future, suggesting that President Trump may visit Russia.

백악관 레빗대변인도 오늘 백악관 브리핑에서 이번 미-러회담에 젤렌스키는 참석하지 않을것이다.”며 “다만 듣기 연습 이 될것 이다.”고 말했다.   향후 3자 회담이 있을것을 암시 하는가운데 트럼프 대통령이 러시아를 방문할 가능성을 시사했다.

Meanwhile, Russian President Putin reportedly had a phone call with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un today and explained the US-Russia talks.

이런가운데 러시아 푸틴 대통령은 오늘 북한 김정은과의 전화 통화를 갖고 미-러간의 회담에 관해 설명을 한 것으로 알려졌다.

Meanwhile, Russia has deployed more than 30,000 North Korean troops to the war in Ukraine, and the Kremlin has said that North Korean troops will continue to be stationed in Russia even after the war ends.

한편 러시아는 우크라이나 전쟁에 북한군  3만명 이상을 투입시켰고, 종전이 될지라도 북한군이 계속 러시아에 주둔할 것이라고 크렘믈린이 밝혔다.

At a regular briefing today (the 12th, local time), State Department Spokesperson Bruce said, "Even if the war between Russia and Ukraine ends, North Korean troops will remain stationed in Russia. When I asked if this issue could be discussed at the upcoming meeting between Presidents Trump and Putin, he said, "I don't know what issues will be discussed, but only the two leaders know what they will discuss."

오늘 (12일, 현지시간) 국무성 부르스 대변인은 정례브리핑에서, “러시아와 우크라이나의 전쟁이 종식되더라도 북한군이 러시아에 주둔할것이다.  이번 트럼프 대통령과 푸틴의 회담에서 이 문제가 논의 될수 있느냐?”는 나의 질문에, “ 어떤 이슈가 논의될지 모르지만 두 정상만이 무엇을 논의할지 알수 있다.”고 말했다.

**Below is my(Janne Pak) Q&A with State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce at  the State Department briefing on August 12, 2025.

[아래는 8월12일 2025년 국무성 브리핑에서 테미 브루스 국무성 대변인과 Janne Pak의 질의 응답이다. ] 

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): Thank you very much, Tammy. Appreciate – I have two questions. The Russia’s Kremlin noted that North Korean troops will continue to be stationed in Russia, even if the war between Russia and Ukraine ends. Do you think this will be an issue in the upcoming negotiation between President Trump and President Putin?

태미, 정말 감사합니다. 감사합니다. 두 가지 질문이 있습니다. 러시아 크렘린궁은 러시아와 우크라이나 간의 전쟁이 끝나더라도 북한군이 러시아에 계속 주둔할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 이 문제가 트럼프 대통령과 푸틴 대통령 간의 향후 협상에서 쟁점이 될 것이라고 생각하십니까?

A:(MS BRUCE): Well, first, again we’ll answer this specifically is that this is not a negotiation that is happening on Friday. And I do know that there is a very specific – well, I won’t know exactly what – where the conversation goes. Of course, none of us can know that, except for the two men involved. But we know that, of course, the topic is Ukraine.(The end)
