King Charles III of the United Kingdom stated before the U.S. Congress, “The bonds between the United States and the United Kingdom are priceless and eternal.”

[찰스 3세 영국 국왕은 미 의회에서 “미국과 영국 사이의 유대는 값을 매길 수 없고 영원하다”고 발언했다.]

On the 28th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump hosted an official welcoming ceremony at the White House for King Charles III of the United Kingdom, who was on a state visit, and emphasized the robust ties between the two nation.

도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령은 28일(현지시간) 백악관에서 국빈 방문 중인 찰스 3세 영국 국왕을 위한 공식 환영식을 열고 미·영 양국의 견고한 유대를 강조했다.

The ceremony proceeded smoothly as the rain that had been falling earlier that morning ceased; the event featured a 21-gun salute to welcome King Charles, along with a military review involving the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force.

이날 오전 행사가 시작하기전 내렸던 비가 멈추면서 행사는 잘 진행되었고 찰스 국왕을 환영하는 21발의 예포와 함께 미국의 육해공군 등 군 사열식이 거행되었다.

Despite the inclement weather, the presence of numerous attendees further illuminated the welcome ceremony.

좋지않은 날씨에도 불구하고  많은 참석자들이 자리를 지켜 더욱 환영을 빛냈다.

In his welcoming remarks, President Trump stated that King Charles III’s intellect, passion, and dedication have served as a blessing not only to the United Kingdom but also to the cherished bonds between the United States and Britain, adding, “I am confident that this relationship will endure for a long time to come.”

트럼프 대통령은 환영사에서 찰스 3세 국왕의 지성과 열정, 헌신이 영국은 물론 미·영 양국의 소중한 유대에 축복이 돼 왔다며 “이런 관계가 앞으로도 오랫동안 이어질 것을 확신한다”고 말했다.

Although President Trump had openly expressed his displeasure with the UK throughout the course of the U.S.-Iran conflict, at today’s welcoming ceremony, he focused on a message that emphasized the "bond" between the two nations.

미·이란 전쟁 과정에서 영국에 노골적인 불만을 드러내 왔던 트럼프 대통령이지만, 이날 환영식에서는 양국 간 ‘유대’에 방점을 찍은 메시지에 집중했다.

The British government, led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has maintained a strained relationship with President Trump, having refused to provide its military bases for airstrikes against Iran and subsequently rejected a request to dispatch warships to the Strait of Hormuz.

키어 스타머 총리가 이끄는 영국 정부는 이란 공습에 자국 군사기지 제공을 거절한 데 이어 호르무즈 해협 군함 파견 요청도 거부하며 트럼프 대통령과 껄끄러운 관계를 이어왔다.

Marking the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States this year, President Trump emphasized that the roots of the American forefathers lie in Britain, thereby highlighting the long-standing history shared by the two nations.

올해 미국 건국 250주년을 맞아 트럼프 대통령은 미국 선조들의 뿌리가 영국에 있음을 강조하며 양국의 오랜 역사도 부각했다.

"Even before the Declaration of Independence, Americans possessed the most precious gift of all moral courage and that gift originated in a small yet great kingdom across the ocean," President Trump stated. "We share the same roots, speak the same language, and uphold the same values."

트럼프 대통령은 “독립 선언 전부터 미국인들은 도덕적 용기라는 가장 귀한 선물을 품고 있었고, 그것은 바다 건너 작지만 위대한 왕국에서 비롯된 것”이라며 “우리는 같은 뿌리를 공유하고, 같은 언어를 쓰며 같은 가치를 지향한다”고 말했다.

President Trump also noted that a bust of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill is displayed in the Oval Office. Furthermore, he shared an anecdote about his mother who was of Scottish descent remarking, "He is so handsome," while watching King Charles III on television during his younger years.

트럼프 대통령은 오벌오피스에 윈스턴 처칠 전 영국 총리 흉상이 놓여 있다는 점도 언급했다. 또 스코틀랜드 출신인 자신의 모친이 찰스 3세 국왕의 젊은 시절 모습을 TV에서 보며 “너무 멋지다”고 했다는 일화를 소개했다.

Upon concluding their private meeting, President Trump told the press, "It was a very good meeting," and described King Charles III as "a truly wonderful person."

비공개 회담을 마친 트럼프 대통령은 취재진에게 “매우 좋은 만남이었다”며 찰스 3세 국왕을 “정말 훌륭한 분”이라고 평가했다.

King Charles III presented a framed reproduction of the 1879 design blueprints for the Oval Office’s “Resolute Desk.” Crafted in 1880 by Queen Victoria from the timbers of the British warship HMS *Resolute*, this desk is regarded as a symbol of Anglo-American friendship. In return, President Trump presented a framed copy of a 1785 letter by former President John Adams, in which he spoke of the friendly relations between the United States and the United Kingdom.

찰스 3세 국왕은 오벌오피스의 ‘결단의 책상’ 1879년 설계 도면 복제본을 액자에 담아 선물했다. 이 책상은 1880년 빅토리아 여왕이 미국 대통령에게 영국 군함 레졸루트함의 잔해 목재로 제작해 선물한 것으로 미·영 친선의 상징으로 여겨진다. 트럼프 대통령은 답례로 1785년 존 애덤스 전 대통령이 미영 양국의 우호 관계를 언급한 서신 사본을 액자에 담아 전달했다.

Meanwhile, the White House posted a photo of the two on its official X account, captioning it, "Two Kings."

한편 백악관은 공식 엑스 계정에 두 사람의 사진을 올리며 “두 명의 왕”이라는 문구를 달았다.

Subsequently, in a joint address to both houses of the U.S. Congress today, King Charles III emphasized that what has been sustained for 80 years must not be neglected, and pledged to further strengthen the long-standing relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.

이어 찰스 3세 국왕은 이날 미 의회 상.하원 합동연설에서 80년간 지탱해온 것 소흘히 해선 안된다며, 미.영간의 오랜 관계를 돈독할 것을 밝혔다.

Furthermore, in a speech delivered to the U.S. Congress in Washington that lasted approximately 30 minutes, he emphasized the value of Western alliances centered on NATO while subtly taking a jab at President Donald Trump.

그는또한 약 30분간 진행한 워싱턴 의회 연설에서 북대서양조약기구(나토)를 중심으로 한 서방 동맹의 가치를 강조하며 도널드 트럼프 대통령에게 미묘한 견제구를 던졌다.

The King stated, “The challenges we face are too great for any single nation to shoulder alone,” adding, “Our relationship is an indispensable partnership.” He went on to emphasize the importance of the NATO alliance now in its 77th year—warning, “We must not take for granted everything that has sustained us over the past 80 years.”

국왕은 “우리가 직면한 도전들은 어느 한 나라가 홀로 감당하기에는 너무 크다”며 “우리의 관계는 필수 불가결한 파트너십”이라고 밝혔다. 이어 “우리는 지난 80년 동안 우리를 지탱해 온 모든 것을 소홀히 여겨선 안 된다”며 올해로 77년째를 맞은 나토 동맹의 중요성을 역설했다.

He noted, “This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks,” and recalled, “Immediately following the attacks when NATO invoked its collective defense clause (Article 5) for the very first time we answered that call together.” He further emphasized, “We have stood shoulder to shoulder through two World Wars, the Cold War, and in Afghanistan,” adding, “That same unwavering resolve is now needed to defend Ukraine and its courageous people.”

그는 “올해는 9·11 테러 25주년”이라며 “테러 직후 나토가 처음으로 집단방위 조항(제5조)을 발동했을 때 우리는 그 부름에 함께 응했다”고 상기시켰다. 또 “두 차례 세계대전, 냉전, 아프가니스탄에서 우리는 어깨를 나란히 해왔다”며 “그와 같은 굳은 결의가 지금은 우크라이나와 그 용감한 국민을 방어하는 데도 필요하다”고 강조했다.

These remarks come at a time when President Trump is strongly criticizing NATO and even raising the possibility of withdrawing from the treaty on the grounds that European nations are failing to cooperate regarding Iran.

이는 트럼프 대통령이 이란전에 유럽 국가들이 협조하지 않는다며 나토를 강하게 비판하고 조약 탈퇴까지 거론하는 상황에서 나온 발언이다.

This is interpreted as an indirect expression of the view that the spirit of the Atlantic Alliance which stood against the Soviet Union during the Cold War and Nazi Germany during World War II must be upheld in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

냉전 시기 소련, 2차 세계대전 당시 나치 독일에 맞섰던 대서양 동맹의 정신을 지금의 우크라이나 전쟁에서도 이어가야 한다는 뜻을 에둘러 전한 것으로 풀이된다.

Seemingly conscious of the chill that has settled over U.S.-U.K. relations in the wake of the Iran crisis, King Charles III remarked, “As President Trump stated during his state visit last autumn, the bonds between the United States and the United Kingdom are priceless and eternal.” (End)
