President Trump clearly articulated his stance that the responsibility for the safety and control of the Strait of Hormuz should be borne by the nations that utilize it—rather than by the United States—stating, "The U.S. will provide assistance if necessary."
트럼프 대통령은 호르무즈 해협의 안전과 통제 책임을 미국이 아닌 이용국들이 맡아야 한다면서 미국은 필요시에 지원을 하겠다는 입장을 분명히 밝혔다.
On the 20th (local time), as he departed for Mar-a-Lago in Florida, President Trump held a question-and-answer session with the White House press corps gathered on the South Lawn before boarding Marine One, the presidential helicopter awaiting his departure.

In response to my(Janne Pak) question—"Do you still want South Korea support the United States?"—President Trump replied, "I love South Korea. We have a great relationship with South Korea. We [the U.S.] are helping South Korea a lot"
트럼프 대통령은 “ 여전히 한국이 미국을 지원하기를 원하느냐”는 나(제니 박)의 질문에 “나는 한국을 사랑한다. 우리는 한국과 훌륭한 관계다. 우리(미국)는 한국을 많이돕고 있다.”고 답변 했다.
An analysis of President Trump’s response suggests that his remark—that "the United States is helping South Korea" may serve as indirect pressure. It implies a desire for South Korea to make more tangible contributions to the U.S., given that the U.S. currently provides a security umbrella through measures such as the stationing of U.S. Forces Korea and the deployment of strategic assets.
트럼프 대통령의 답변에 대한 분석을 해 보면, ‘미국이 한국을 도와주고 있다’는 언급은 주한미군 주둔, 전략자산 전개등 미국이 안보우산을 제공 해 주고 있는 만큼 한국도 미국에 더 가시적인 기여를 해 주길 바란다는 우회적인 압박일수도 있다.
Previously, President Trump had called upon seven nations—including South Korea, Japan, China, and France—to participate in an operation to escort oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently subject to an Iranian blockade.
앞서 트럼프 대통령은 한국, 일본, 중국, 프랑스 등 7개국에 이란이 봉쇄중인 호르무즈 해협을 지나는 유조선 호위 작전에 동참할 것을 요구한바 있다.
In particular, the United States and South Korea are bound by a mutual defense treaty; consequently, should either nation face aggression, the other would be compelled to intervene.
특히 미국과 한국은 상호방위조약이 체결되어 있어 어느 한 국가가 침략을 당할경우 반드시 개입할수 밖에 없는 상황에 놓여있게 된다.
Responding to a reporter's question, President Trump stated, "The United States does not need to use the Strait of Hormuz; rather, South Korea, Japan, China, and Europe do." He added, "Therefore, those nations will need to get involved in this matter to some extent."
트럼프 대통령은 또한 기자의 답변에 “미국은 호르무즈 해협 사용에 대해 필요하지 않는다”며 “한국, 일본, 중국, 그리고 유럽이 필요하다.”고 말하면서 “그 문제는 그들이 어느정도 관여해야 할것이다.”고 밝혔다.
Japan, China, and South Korea, among others, rely on the Strait of Hormuz for crude oil transport at an average rate exceeding 75%.
원유 수송을 위해 호르무즈 해협을 사용해야 하는 의존도는 일본과 중국, 한국 등이 평균 75% 이상이다.
Given that the United States has a low dependency on crude oil transported through the Strait of Hormuz, it is the U.S. position that it is reasonable for those nations with high dependency to participate in activities such as escorting oil tankers.
미국은 호르무즈 해협을 통해 수송되는 원유의 의존도가 낮은 만큼, 의존도가 높은 국가들이 유조선 호위 등에 참여하는 것이 타당하다는 판단이다.
Rather than simply stating that it has "received no official request from the United States," the Korean government should demonstrate a willingness to "give the matter careful consideration" within the framework of the ROK-U.S. alliance regarding the U.S. request to dispatch warships.
한국 정부는 미국의 군함 파견 요청에 ‘ 미국의 공식 요청을 받은 바 없다.”고만말할게 아니라 한미 동맹 차원에서 ‘신중히 고려해 보는’ 태도를 보여야 한다.
In particular, given that the United States and South Korea are bound by a mutual defense treaty, they find themselves in a situation where intervention is inevitable in the event of war.
특히 미국과 한국은 상호방위조약이 체결되어 있어 전쟁시 반드시 개입할수 밖에 없는 상황에 놓여있다.
There is absolutely no reason for South Korea to hesitate in assisting and contributing to the United States during the current conflict between the U.S. and Iran; this is because, should North Korea—a nuclear-armed state—ever seize upon the chaotic atmosphere of war to launch a surprise invasion of the South, it is abundantly clear that the United States would immediately intervene on South Korea's behalf. 이번 미국과 이란 전쟁에서 한국이 미국을 도와 기여하는데 주저해야 될 하등의 이유가 없는 것은, 만에하나 어수선한 전쟁분위기에 틈을 타서 핵무기를 가진 북한이 한국은 기습 침략했을때 미국은 즉각 한국을 위해 개입할 것이 분명하기 때문이다.(끝)
