@Q&A with a Pentagon Press Secretary General Pat Ryder and Janne Pak at the Pentagon Press Briefing on January 13, 2025.

@On the @11th, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted a photo on social media X, saying it was of the belongings of a captured North Korean soldier. The soldier is holding a Russian passport.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced on the 13th that there were 1,000 North Korean casualties. Meanwhile, the South Korean National Intelligence Service announced at the Intelligence Committee of the National Assembly on the 13th (local time), “The area of ​​engagement of North Korean troops deployed to Russia is expanding to the entire Kursk region,” and “The scale of North Korean casualties is estimated to have exceeded 3,000, with approximately 300 dead and 2,700 wounded.”

한편 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령은 지난 11일 북한군 2명을 생포했으며 이들은 러시아 여권을 가지고 있었고 한국어로 심문을 했다고 발표했다. 그러면서 생포된 북한군과 러시아에 억류된 우크라이나군과의 포로교환을 북한 김정은에게 제안했다고 발표했다.

In a briefing on the 13th, Pentagon Press Secretary General Patrick Ryder said, “The North Korean troops that have been deployed are a capable force and pose a threat to the Ukrainian military, and although the Ukrainian military is holding the front line, it is a very difficult fight.” He continued, “As evidenced by the fact that Russia has deployed 12,000 North Korean troops to the battlefield, the size of the force is clearly making the Ukrainian military’s fight much more difficult, and we have seen Russia make gradual progress.”

General Ryder responded to my question at the briefing, “What is the U.S. view on President Zelenskyy’s proposal to North Korea’s Kim Jong Un to swap captured North Korean soldiers for Ukrainian soldiers held in Russian custody?” He said, “Questions about a potential prisoner exchange should be directed to President Zelensky.”

Last weekend, the US-ROK  NCG (Nuclear Consultative Group) meeting was held in Washington, and when the incoming administration was asked about the existence of the NCG, he responded, “I cannot speak for the incoming administration.”

지난주말 미한 NCG(핵협의체 그룹) 회의가 워싱턴에서 개최되었는데 들어오는 행정부에서 NCG의 존재여부에 대한 질문에, “나는 들어오는 행정부를 대신해서 말할 수 없다.”고 답했다.

Also, when asked, “Do you think that only the US extended deterrence can prevent North Korea’s nuclear provocations? Or is it possible that the US will allow the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea as another way to challenge North Korea’s nuclear threat?”, he said, “Our policy hasn't changed when it comes to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

또한 “미국의 확장 억제력만이 북한의 핵 도발을 막을 수 있다고 생각하시나요? 아니면 미국이 북한의 핵 위협에 도전하는 또 다른 방법으로서 한국에 전술 핵무기 배치를 허용할 가능성이 있는가”라는 질문에는, “한반도 비핵화에 대한 우리의 정책은 변하지 않았다.”고 말했다.
