"Pentagon: Very concerned about strengthening solidarity between N. Korea, Russia, China, Iran_ Will cooperation and deterrence with allies"

@Q&A with a Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh and Janne Pak at the Pentagon Press Briefing on May 1, 2024.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin appeared at the House Armed Services Committee hearing to deliberate the 2025 fiscal year defense budget on the 30th and said, “I am concerned about the strengthening of solidarity between China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran,” and added, “We are watching this very closely.”

Regarding military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said on the 1st, “We are taking this issue seriously and are continuing to monitor it at the department level.”

At a regular press briefing on the 1st, Deputy Press Secretary Singh responded to my question, “What efforts is the United States making to prevent military cooperation with North Korea, China, Russia, Iran, etc., in relation to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s remarks at the Congressional hearing the previous day (30th)?” “North Korea is gaining more confidence through its partnership with Putin,” she said. “This is very concerning and something we need to watch.”

Also, when asked, “Do you have any information that Russia is recruiting North Korean mercenaries for the war against Ukraine?” she responded, “I have no information about that, and I have never seen any reports about it, but North Korea is recruiting mercenaries for the war with Ukraine.” “I know for sure that they are willing to support Russia in the war,” she emphasizing that “North Korea is one of the countries that supports Russia, along with Iran.” “More than 50 countries and partners support Ukraine,” she added.

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): Thank you, Sabrina. The Defense Secretary Austin said at a congressional hearing that North Korea has gained confidence due to its close relationship with Russian President Putin, and is concerned about its solidarity with China, Russia, and Iran. What measures will the United States take to prevent military cooperation from these countries?

A:(MS. SINGH): Yeah, Janne, I don't have much more to add to what the Secretary said in front of Congress yesterday. I think he spoke quite well to this — is that we are concerned — we're certainly concerned about the deepening relationship that the DPRK and Russia have, that — together with Iran, that that is fueling Russia on the battlefield in Ukraine as they continue to wage this illegal war and kill many innocent Ukrainian civilians.

So in terms of what we are doing as the United States, we continue to monitor. The Department of Defense, of course you've seen us strengthen our own relationships with Iraq, within the region. We continue to arm Ukraine with the weapons it needs on the battlefield. And then across the interagency, you've seen from — the Treasury Department announcing more sanctions on whether it be Russia, DPRK, and others.

A:(MS. SINGH): I don't have any information on that. I haven't seen any reports on that, but that being said, we certainly know that the DPRK is willing to support Russia in its fight against Ukraine, and that is one country supporting Russia along with Iran. You have over 50 countries and partners supporting Ukraine in its fight be — and that's, you know, what you saw last week with the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. The Secretary announced additional commitments there.
