@Q&A with a State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott and Janne Pak at the State Department Press Briefing on Jun 26, 2025.

In a briefing today (26th, local time), State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, respond to my question, “Russian Defense Secretary Belousov annaunced that he would send thousands of North Korean engineers to rebuild Kursk. And Kursk is Ukrainian territory. Do you think this issue will become a point of contention in ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine?”

He said, “As the President has said many times, we hope to see that ceasefire – that long peace – that we’ve been working for that, engaging with that. Ultimately it is up to the parties in order to reach that.“

When asked, “How much will the U.S. increase South Korea’s defense cost-sharing and when will it discuss this issue?” he said, ”Let me take back your question and see if we can get some further details for you.“

한국 방위비분담금에 대해 미국은 얼마나 증액할것이고, 언제 이문제를 논의 할것이냐?“는 질문에는, ”귀하의 질문에 대해 좀 더 자세히 알아서 내용을 알려드리겠다.“고 말했다.

White House Press Secretary Leavitt also responded positively to the question of increasing defense spending by allies such as South Korea in today's briefing, adding that this is a matter for President Trump to decide.

백악관 레빗 대변인도 오늘 브리핑에서 한국등 동맹국들의 방위비를 증액할 것에 대해 긍정적으로 답변했으며 이것은 트럼프 대통령이 결정지을 사항이라고 덧붙였다.

QUESTION:(Janne Pak): Thank you, Tommy. Two questions. The Russian defense secretary, Andrey Belousov, announced that thousands of North Korean engineer corps would be sent to help rebuild Kursk. Kursk is Ukraine territory. Do you think this will be an issue between Russia and Ukraine in ceasefire talks?

A:(MR PIGOTT): On the issue of North Korea’s support for Russia or vice versa. We’ve spoken to that multiple times from this podium. I refer you to those earlier comments from myself and Spokesperson Bruce. As the President has said many times, we hope to see that ceasefire – that long peace – that we’ve been working for that, engaging with that. Ultimately it is up to the parties in order to reach that.
