White House Press Secretary Leavitt, the timeline of the tariff increase,“ I will make sure that our trade team at the White House get you an answer swiftly and properly.”

Amidst growing negative sentiment in the U.S. due to the South Korean government's delay in implementing tariff agreements, White House Press Secretary  Karoline Leavitt stated that the White House trade team would provide  and  swiftly and properly regarding the timing of tariff increases.

한국정부의 관세이행 지연으로 인해 미국의 부정적인 기류가 깊어지고 있는가운데 캐롤라인 레빗 백악관 대변인은  관세인상 시기에 대해, 백악관 무역팀이 신속하고 정확하게 알려 줄것이라고 밝혔다.

President Trump mentioned a 25% tariff increase on South Korea, and while South Korean government officials, including the foreign afairs and trade ministers, rushed to Washington to meet with their American counterparts, they had to return home without receiving a satisfactory answer.

트럼프 대통령은 한국에 25% 관세인상을 언급했고, 한국정부의 외교 및 통상,무역 장관들이 워싱턴으로 속속들이 달려와 미국의 카운터 파트너들과 만남을 가졌지만 만족할만한 답변을 받지 못한채 발걸음을 돌려야 했다.

At a White House briefing today (local time, February 5), White House Press Secretary  Karoline Leavitt responded to my question about the timing of South Korea's tariff increase with the following statement.

오늘 (5일. 현지시간) 백악관 브리핑에서 캐롤라인 레빗 백악관 대변인은 한국의 관세인상 시기에 대한 나의 질문을 받고 아래와 같이 답변했다.

Question: (Janne Pak): Thank you Karoline, I have two questions on tariffs on South Korea. As you know, President Trump recently mentioned increasing tariffs on South Korea. -When will the 25% tariff increase on South Korea begin? -What impact will this have on national security?

질문 (제니 박): 감사합니다. 캘롤라인, 한국에 대한 관세와 관련 두가지 질문이 있습니다. 아시다시피 트럼프 대통령은 최근 한국에 대한 관세 인상을 언급했습니다. 한국에 대한 25% 관세 인상은 언제 시작됩니까? 그리고 이것이 국가안보에 어떤 영향을 미칠까요?

Answer:(Karoline Leavitt): “Sure, I don't have a timeline for it right now, I will make sure that our trade team at the White House get you an answer swiftly and properly.”

답변:(캐롤라인 레빗,  백악관 대변인): 네, 현재 그에대한 일정을 나는 가지고 있지 않지만, 백악관 무역팀이 신속하고 정확하게 답변 드릴 수 있도록 하겠습니다.

Following President Trump's mention of tariff increases, the White House, Treasury Department, and trade team have shown signs of preparing to publish the measures in the Federal Register, indicating a lack of trust from the U.S. towards South Korea and suggesting that there are unusual tensions in U.S.-South Korea relations.

트럼프 대통령이 관세 인상을 언급한후 백악관과 재무, 통상 무역팀이 관보에 게재할 움직임을 보이면서 미국이 한국에 대한 신뢰를 하지 못하고 있다는 걸 보이고 있어 한미 관계에 이상 기류가 있음을 알수 있다.

On the previous day, February  4th (local time), South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun  met with Secretary of State Rubio at the State Department building and explained that the delay in South Korea's investment in the U.S. was not intentional. However, Secretary Rubio stated that the "atmosphere in the U.S. is not good" regarding South Korea's failure to fulfill Its trade-related commitments, suggesting that tariff increases are becoming a real possibility.

전날인 4일(현지시간) 조현 한국 외무부장관은 루비오 장관과 국무부 청사에서 만나, 한국의 대비 투자 지연은 고의가 아니라고 설명했다. 하지만 루비오 국무장관은, 통상 관련 공약을 이행하지 않는 한국에 대해, “미국 분위기가 안 좋다.”고 말함으로서 관세인상이 현실화 될 조짐을 짐작할수 있다.

The South Korean government is also concerned that trade issues could negatively impact cooperation in other areas, such as security.

또한 한국 정부는 통상문제로 인해 안보등 다른 분야 협력에 부정적 영향이 미치게 될 것에 대한 우려를 갖고 있다.

As Foreign Minister Cho Hyun has stated, there are red flags regarding key agreements in U.S.-South Korea cooperation, including those concerning nuclear power, nuclear-powered submarines, and shipbuilding.

조현 외무부장관이 밝혔듯이, 원자력과 핵추진 잠수함, 조선 등 한미 협력 핵심 합의 사항에 대해 빨간불이 켜져있다.

This is because recent visits by U.S. Department of Defense officials to Turkey, where they held meetings with U.S. aircraft carrier, submarine, and shipbuilding industry representatives, raise concerns that the "MASGA" project, which was promised to South Korea, may be jeopardized.

그도그럴것이 최근 미 국방부 관계자들이 튀르기에를 방문해  미 항공모함,잠수함,조선업 관계자들과 회의를 가짐으로서 한국과 약속한 “마스가”사업에 차질이 초래될 우려도 있다.

Although the South Korean government explained to the U.S. that it is firmly committed to implementing the U.S.-Korea tariff agreement, it is clear that regardless of the reason, President Lee Jae-myung, not the bureaucrats, will have to bear the responsibility for failing to keep the promise. 한국정부의 한미 관세 합의 이행의지가 확고 하다는 점을 미국에 설명했지만 이유가 어떻든, 약속을 지키지 못한  대가에 대한 책임은 관료들이 아닌 이재명 대통령이 져야 할 것임이 분명하다.(끝)
