Trump, "We can attack whenever we want."

"Iran must come to the negotiating table with a genuine attitude."

On the 2nd (local time), President Trump held an gaggle with reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to Washington after spending the weekend in Bedminster, New Jersey.

트럼프 대통령은 2일(현지시간) 뉴저지주 베드민스터에서 주말을 보낸 뒤 워싱턴으로 돌아오는 에어포스 원 기내에서 기자들과 짧은 간담회를 가졌습니다.

When asked by a reporter what prompted him to call off the attack on Iran last night, President Trump said, "It was at the request of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Iran. We were all set to attack. It was around this time; had the strike gone ahead, it would have been a massive one. We were fully prepared."

트럼프 대통령은 이란에 대해 "어젯방 공격을 취소하게 된 계기는 무엇이었느냐?"는 기자의 질문을 받고,

"사우디아라비아, UAE, 카타르, 그리고 이란의 요청이었습니다. 우리 모두 공격 준비를 마친 상태였습니다. 지금 이 시간쯤이었는데, 만약 공격이 성공했다면 엄청난 공격이 되었을 겁니다. 우리는 모든 준비를 마쳤습니다."고 말했다.

At the same time, "However, if allies request that the attack be called off, I have no choice but to say, 'Let's wait and see what happens."

그러면서 "하지만 동맹국들이 공격 취소를 요청하면, '어떻게 될지 지켜보자'라고 말할 수밖에 없습니다.

"They(Iran) made the request because they believed negotiations were underway. They thought there had been negotiations regarding the Strait of Hormuz issue and that there would also be negotiations concerning the nuclear issue," he said.

"그들(이란)이 요청한 이유는 협상이 진행 중이라고 생각했기 때문입니다. 호르무즈 문제에 대한 협상이 있었고, 핵 문제에 대한 협상도 있을 거라고 생각했습니다.»고 말했다.

You could call it Iran's denuclearization; I, for one, call it Iran's denuclearization. What kind of outcome should we expect?

이란의 비핵화라고 부를 수도 있겠죠. 저는 이란의 비핵화라고 부릅니다. 어떤 결과를 예상해야 할까요?

We will hold off on the attack. Let’s see how the situation unfolds. We can attack whenever we want. However, we have received requests from three major groups.

우리는 공격을 보류할 겁니다. 상황을 지켜보죠. 우리는 원할 때 언제든 공격할 수 있습니다. 하지만 저희는 세 주요 그룹으로부터 요청을 받았습니다.

We received a particularly strong request from Iran; they wanted us to participate.

특히 이란으로부터 매우 강하게 요청을 받았죠. 그들은 저희가 참여해 주기를 바란다고 했습니다.

Although President Trump did not specifically address the ongoing discussions between Iran and Oman regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, the principle that the United States should hold control over the strait remains unchanged.

트럼프 대통령은 호르무즈 해협 개방과 관련해 진척되고 있는 이란과 오만 사이의 협의에 대해서는 구체적으로 언급하지 않았지만, 호르무즈 해협 통제권은 미국이 가져야 한다는 원칙은 바뀌지 않았다.

Iran claimed on the same day that it had reached an agreement with Oman on shipping lanes to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, adding that a joint statement between the two countries was in the final stages of preparation.

이란은 이날 호르무즈 해협에서 상선이 안전하게 통항할 수 있도록 오만과 항로를 합의했다며 양국 공동 성명이 마무리 단계라고 주장했다.

The United States is warning that it will refrain from military action if Iran engages in serious negotiations, but will resort to the military option at any time if it does not.

미국은 이란이 진지하게 협상을 해 올 경우 군사적 행동을 자제하겠지만 그렇지 않으면 언제라도 군사적 카드를 사용할 것이라고 경고하고 있다.

There are signs that "peace through strength" the U.S. approach will be applied as is.

미국의 힘에 의한 평화가 그대로 적용될 조짐이다.(끝)
