Upon returning to Washington following a three-day summit with China, President Trump held a phone conversation with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung from the White House on the 17th (local time)—just before heading to the golf course, as he invariably does on weekends to maintain his physical fitness.

2박 3일간의 미중 정상회담을 마치고 워싱턴으로 돌아온 트럼프 대통령은 17일(현지시간) 주말이면 여지없이 자신의 체력관리를 위해서 골프장으로 향하기 직전, 백악관에서 이재명 한국 대통령과 전화통화를 가졌다.

This call between President Trump and President Lee Jae-myung was initiated by the South Korean side, which had requested the conversation to be briefed on the outcomes of the U.S.-China summit.

트럼프 대통령과 이재명 한국 대통령간의 정상 통화는 한국측이 먼저 미·중 정상회담 결과 청취를 위해 통화를 요청한 것이다.

The recent telephone conversation between the U.S. and South Korean leaders took place on the morning of the 17th at 9:00 AM (local time), when South Korean President Lee Jae-myung placed a call to President Trump. During the approximately 30-minute call, the two leaders reportedly discussed the outcomes of the U.S.-China summit sharing details appropriate for close allies and engaged in a dialogue reflecting a shared understanding regarding the issue of peace on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the smooth implementation of the joint fact sheet.

이번 미한 정상간의 통화는 17일 오전 9시(현지시간) 이재명 한국대통령이 트럼프 대통령에게 전화를 해 옴으로서 약 30분간의 통화에서 미중 정상회담 결과에 대해 우방국으로서 공유할수 있는, 한반도 평화문제에 대한 공감이 담긴 대화 및 조인트 팩트시트의 원활한 이행 등에 관련해서 논의했다고 알려졌다.

On Sunday, the 17th, the White House released a fact sheet regarding the U.S.-China summit held that day. The document affirms that both the United States and China have reaffirmed their shared objective of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. It is evident that President Trump discussed the North Korean issue with President Xi Jinping, and that both nations are clearly committed to working toward the denuclearization of the peninsula.

백악관은 17일(일요일), 오늘 미중정상회담에 대한 팩트시트를 공개했다. 여기에는 미국과 중국은 한반도 비핵화의 공동목표를 확인한다는 내용이 담겨있다. 트럼프 대통령은 시진핑과 북한문제를 논의한 것이며, 한반도의 비핵화를 위해 양국이 분명히 노력할 것이라는 것이 보인다.

During his recent summit with President Trump, President Xi Jinping appeared to fully accommodate Trump’s demands regarding the resolution of the Iran issue; however, behind the scenes, he has been acting quite differently. The North Korean nuclear issue appears to be no exception; although he has pledged to make joint efforts toward denuclearization, it is patently obvious that this, too, amounts to nothing more than mere rhetoric.

시진핑 주석은 이번 트럼프 대통령과의 회담에서 이란 문제 해결을 위해 트럼프 대통령이 원하는 것들을 다 수용한 듯 하지만 뒤로 돌아서서는 다른 행동을 하고 있다. 북한 핵 문제 역시 비핵화를 위해 공동노력을 하겠다고 약속하고 있지만 이 또한 레토릭(말뿐)에 불과할것이 뻔하다.

Moreover, given that Russian President Putin is visiting China from the 19th to the 20th just days after President Trump’s summit concluded to hold a summit with Xi Jinping, it certainly appears that China is, in fact, more concerned with appeasing Russia than the United States.

더구나 트럼프 대통령과 정상회담이 끝난지 며칠만에 오는 19일부터 20일까지 푸틴 러시아 대통령이 시진핑과 정상회담을 위해 중국을 방문하는 것으로 봐 중국은 역시 미국보다 러시아의 눈치를 보고 있는 것이 확실히 보인다.

In contrast to his earlier conduct when, immediately after concluding his visit to China, he personally called Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi from Air Force One while en route back to Washington to brief him on the details of the trip President Trump’s subsequent phone conversation with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, albeit belated, is nonetheless a welcome development; it is fortunate that the leaders of both South Korea and Japan allies of the United States were able to receive a briefing on the outcome of the China visit directly from President Trump.

앞서 중국방문을 마치고 워싱턴으로 돌아오는 에어포스원에서 다카이치 일본총리에게 먼저 직접 전화를 걸어 중국방문에 대한 상황을 설명했던거와는 달리, 이재명 한국대통령이 트럼프 대통령에게 전화를 걸어서 이루어진 통화는 뒤늦긴 하지만 한일 양국 정상이 동맹인 미국 트럼프 대통령에게 방중상황에 대해 들을수 있다는 것은 다행이다.

During the phone call, President Lee began by extending his congratulations on the successful conclusion of President Trump’s state visit to Chinathe first such visit in nine years and stated that "the stable management of U.S.-China relations will contribute to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region and across the globe."

이 대통령은 통화에서 먼저 9년 만에 이루어진 트럼프 대통령의 국빈 방중이 성공적으로 이루어진 것에 대해 축하 인사를 전했으며 “미·중 관계의 안정적 관리가 인도·태평양 지역과 전 세계의 평화와 번영에 기여할 것”이라고 밝혔다.

It was also reported that President Lee "highly appreciated the constructive discussions held between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding issues concerning the Korean Peninsula." In response, President Trump affirmed, "Moving forward, and based on close coordination between the leaders of the U.S. and South Korea, I will continue to play the necessary role and make contributions toward peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula."

이 대통령은 또한 «트럼프 대통령과 시진핑 중국 국가주석이 한반도 문제에 대해 건설적인 협의를 가진 점을 높이 평가했다.»고 알려졌으며.  트럼프 대통령은 “앞으로도 한미 정상 간의 긴밀한 공조를 기초로 한반도의 평화와 안정을 위해 필요한 역할과 기여를 해나가겠다”고 화답했다.

In this regard, although President Trump reportedly briefed President Lee directly on the key outcomes of the U.S.-China summit including the overall state of U.S.-China relations, economic and trade agreements, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East it may have been difficult to discuss such a wide range of issues comprehensively during a 30 minute phone call.

이에 트럼프 대통령은 미·중 관계 전반, 경제·무역 합의, 한반도 및 중동 정세 등 미·중 정상회담의 주요 결과를 이 대통령에게 직접 설명했다고 하지만 30분동안의 통화에서 많은 이슈들을 논의하기엔 무리일수 있다.

President Lee commended President Trump’s active leadership in addressing the situation in the Middle East and expressed hope that peace and stability would be restored to the region as soon as possible. Both leaders also expressed their anticipation for a reunion at the G7 Summit scheduled for the middle of next month.

이 대통령은 중동 상황 해결을 위한 트럼프 대통령의 적극적 리더십을 평가하고, 중동에서 평화와 안정이 조속히 회복되기를 희망한다고 전했다. 양 정상은 다음 달 중순 예정된 G7 정상회의에서의 재회에 대한 기대감도 표명했다.

This telephone conversation marks the second call between the leaders of South Korea and the United States in 345 days since June 6 of last year, shortly after President Lee’s inauguration and represents the first direct communication between the two heads of state in 200 days, following their summit held in Gyeongju on October 29 of last year.

이번 통화는 이 대통령의 취임 직후였던 지난해 6월 6일 이후 345일 만에 이뤄진 한미 정상 간 두 번째 통화로, 지난해 10월 29일 경주에서 가졌던 한미 정상회담 이후 200일 만에 이뤄진 정상 간 직접 소통이기도 하다.

Observing Xi Jinping’s arrogant demeanor and the indiscriminate, ruthless conduct of the Chinese security detail during the recent U.S.-China summit, I believe that China still has a long road ahead before it can truly be considered a "G2" nation. It seems that South Korean President Lee Jae-myung needs to realize that communication with our ally, the United States, is far more valuable than a pro-China stance. (End)
