"President Trump's visit to China his first in nine years has officially begun. What did the United States and China each gain, and what did they concede, during this visit?"

On November 14 (local time) the day the U.S.-China summit was held in Beijing U.S. President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping carried out a joint schedule that included a morning summit, a visit to the Temple of Heaven, and a banquet.

 미중 정상회담이 베이징에서 개최된 14일(현지시간) 트럼프 미국 대통령과 시진핑 중국 국가주석은 오전 정상회담을 시작으로 톈탄공원 방문, 만찬 등의 일정을 함께 소화했다.

During this summit marking President Trump’s first visit to China in nine years President Xi demonstrated a warmth and intimacy akin to inviting a long-time friend into his home.

트럼프 대통령의 9년 만의 방중으로 이뤄진 이번 회담에서 시 주석은 오랜 친구를 집으로 초대한 것 같은 친밀함을 보여 줬다.

President Trump arrived at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing the venue for the summit at approximately 10:00 a.m. that day, riding in his presidential limousine, "The Beast." He was clad in a navy suit paired with a red tie a color particularly favored by the Chinese people. President Xi Jinping waited outside the Great Hall of the People to personally welcome President Trump.

트럼프 대통령은 이날 오전 10시쯤 정상회담 장소인 베이징 인민대회당에 전용차 ‘비스트’를 타고 남색 정장에 중국인이 좋아하는 붉은색 넥타이 차림으로 등장했다. 시 주석은 인민대회당 앞에 나와 기다리다가 직접 트럼프 대통령을 맞이했다.

During the welcoming ceremony, the Chinese side accorded President Trump the highest level of state guest protocol, including a 21-gun salute. As they proceeded toward the meeting room and ascended the stairs, President Xi paused to point out and introduce various landmarks in downtown Beijing to President Trump.

환영 행사에서 중국 측은 21발의 예포를 쏘며 트럼프 대통령에게 최고 수준의 국빈 예우를 했다. 시 주석은 회담장으로 이동하며 계단을 오르던 중 트럼프 대통령을 멈춰 세워 베이징 시내 명소를 소개하기도 했다.

The "scene stealers" of the day's welcoming ceremony were the flower children, who enthusiastically waved the national flags of both countries and bouquets of flowers while cheering for the two leaders. President Trump even clapped in return as he watched the children who were jumping up and down with excitement  shouting loud cheers in his direction. Yet, a smile of pity played upon his lips, as if he were well aware that the Communist regime had mechanically drilled these children, subjecting them to grueling exploitation.

이날 환영 행사의 ‘신스틸러’는 두 정상을 향해 양국 국기와 꽃을 열정적으로 흔들며 환호한 화동들이었다. 트럼프 대통령은 팔짝팔짝 뛰며 자신에게 큰 환호를 보낸 화동들을 바라보며 박수를 건네기도 했다. 그러나 공산당정권이 기계적으로 훈련시켜 어린이들을 혹사하는 것을 알고 있는듯 입가엔 연민의 미소가 흘렀다.

After holding talks for 135 minutes, the two leaders proceeded around 1:00 p.m. to the Temple of Heaven a UNESCO World Heritage site—where they engaged in cordial conversation. Inviting President Trump to the Temple of Heaven, home to the altar where ancient emperors once performed sacrificial rites, is regarded as a rare instance of special diplomatic protocol. Accompanied solely by their interpreters, the two leaders continued their dialogue as they strolled through the Temple of Heaven for approximately 30 minutes.

135분간 회담한 두 정상은 오후 1시쯤 유네스코 문화유산인 톈탄공원으로 이동해 환담했다. 옛 황제가 제사를 지냈던 제단이 있는 톈탄공원에 트럼프 대통령을 초대한 것은 이례적인 특별 의전 사례로 꼽힌다. 두 정상은 통역만 대동한 채 약 30분 동안 톈탄공원을 거닐면서도 대화를 이어 갔다.

Located approximately 7 kilometers south of the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven Park is a major Beijing landmark constructed in 1420 during the reign of the Ming Dynasty emperors. The itinerary is interpreted as having been arranged with the specific intention of introducing President Trump to this "imperial space."

자금성에서 남쪽으로 약 7㎞ 떨어진 위치에 있는 톈탄공원은 1420년 명나라 황제 시절에 지어진 베이징의 주요 명소다. 트럼프 대통령에게 ‘황제의 공간’을 소개한다는 의미를 담아 일정을 준비한 것으로 해석된다.

During his stroll, President Trump responded to reporters' questions regarding the outcome of the summit by simply saying, "Excellent." Speaking of the Temple of Heaven Park, he remarked, "It’s a magnificent place. It’s unbelievable. China is beautiful."

트럼프 대통령은 산책 도중 정상회담 결과에 대한 기자들의 질문에 “훌륭하다”고 답했고, 톈탄공원에 대해선 “멋진 곳이다. 믿기지 않을 정도다. 중국은 아름답다”고 말했다.

The final engagement of the day for the two leaders was a dinner. President Xi emphasized U.S.-China cooperation, stating, "China's rejuvenation and 'MAGA' (Make America Great Again) can go hand in hand," to which President Trump responded by proposing a toast "to the rich and enduring relationship between the American and Chinese people."

이날 두 정상의 마지막 일정은 만찬이었다. 시 주석은 “중국의 부흥과 ‘마가’(미국을 다시 위대하게)는 같이 갈 수 있다”고 미중 협력을 강조했고, 트럼프 대통령은 “미국 국민과 중국 국민 사이의 풍부하고 지속적인 관계를 위해서”라고 건배를 제의하며 화답했다.
