U.S. Secretary of the Army Hegseth and South Korean Minister of National Defense Ahn Gyu-back held talks on the 11th (local time) at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

헤그세스 미 전쟁부장관과 안규백 한국 국방장관이 11일(현지시간) 워싱턴 DC소재 미 국방부청사(펜타곤)에서 회담을 가졌다.

The ministers of both nations discussed key alliance issues—including the transfer of wartime operational control and the modernization of the alliance—and agreed to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual security interest in the future.

양국 장관은 전작권 전환, 동맹 현대화 등 주요 동맹 현안에 대해 논의하고, 향후 상호 안보 이익의 영역에서 협력을 강화해 나가기로 했다.

Regarding the transfer of wartime operational control, South Korea aims to complete the process by the end of 2028, whereas the United States has proposed the first quarter of 2029 (the second quarter of the U.S. fiscal year) as the deadline.

전작권 전환의 경우 한국은 2028년 말까지를 목표로 하고 있지만, 미국은 2029년 1분기(미 회계연도 기준 2분기)를 시한으로 제시했다.

Following the start of the meeting on this day, the U.S. Department of Defense (the Pentagon) issued a press release explaining that expanding burden-sharing with U.S. allies and partners constitutes one of the four key lines of effort comprising the 2026 U.S. National Defense Strategy (NDS), while identifying the remaining three as: 0, defending the U.S. homeland; 0, deterring China in the Indo-Pacific region through strength; and 0, strengthening the U.S. defense industrial base.

미 전쟁부(펜타곤)는 이날 회의 시작 이후 보도자료를 내고 미국의 동맹 및 파트너들과의 부담 분담 확대는 2026년 미국 국가방위전략(NDS)을 구성하는 4가지 핵심 노력 노선 중 하나라면서, 나머지 3가지는 0. 미국 본토 방어 0. 힘을 통한 인도·태평양 지역에서의 중국 억제 0. 미국 방산 기반 강화 등이라고 설명했다.

Attending the meeting on the U.S. side were Secretary Hegseth, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy Elbridge Colby, Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Christopher Mahoney, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs John No, and Chief of Staff Ricky Buria.

이날 회담에는 미국 측에서는 헤그세스 장관과 엘브리지 콜비 국방부 정책차관, 크리스토퍼 마호니 합동참모본부 부의장, 존 노 인도·태평양 안보 담당 차관보, 리키 부리아 비서실장 등이 배석했다.

Representing the Korean side, Minister Ahn Gyu-back was joined by Ambassador Kang Kyung-wha, Defense Attaché to the U.S. Brigadier General Yoon Hyung-jin, Director General for Policy Kim Hong-chul, Spokesperson Jung Bit-na, and Director General for International Policy Lee Gwang-seok.

한국 측에서는 안규백장관과 강경화 주미대사, 윤형진 주미 국방무관(준장), 김홍철 국방부 정책실장, 정빛나 국방부 대변인, 이광석 국방부 국제정책관이 자리를 같이 했다.

During a one-hour meeting, the ministers of both countries discussed the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and reaffirmed that the Korea-U.S. Integrated Defense Dialogue (KIDD) to be held in Washington this week plays a crucial role in enhancing alliance cooperation and advancing the national interests of both nations.

양국 장관은 1시간 동안 진행된 회담에서 한반도 안보정세에 대해 논의하고 이번주 워싱턴에서 개최될 한미 통합국방협의체(KIDD) 회의가 동맹협력과 앙국의 국익 증진에 있어 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있다는 것을 재확인 했다.

In his opening remarks today, Secretary Hegseth stated, "Our meeting today is taking place at a critical moment for the ROK-U.S. alliance," adding that "both nations are taking strong measures to ensure our combined readiness and defend our core national security interests."

헤그세스 장관은 이날 모두 발언에서 "오늘 우리의 회담은 한미 동맹에 있어 중대한 순간에 이뤄지고 있다"면서 "양국은 우리의 연합 대비 태세를 보장하고 핵심적인 국가 안보 이익을 방어하기 위해 강력한 조치들을 취하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

Hegseth continued, "In the current global threat environment, the strength of our alliance is paramount, and the United States expects its partners to stand shoulder to shoulder with us." He added, "As I noted during my visit to Seoul last November, Korea's commitment to increasing its defense spending along with your leadership in assuming primary responsibility is of critical importance."

헤그세스는 이어 "현재의 글로벌 위협 환경 속에서 우리 동맹의 힘은 매우 중요하며, 미국은 파트너들이 우리와 어깨를 나란히 하기를 기대한다"면서 "지난해 11월 서울 방문 당시 언급했듯이, 한국의 국방비 증액에 대한 약속과 일차적 책임을 맡으려는 여러분의 리더십은 매우 중요하다"고 말했다.

Secretary Hegseth remarked, "This demonstrates an alliance-level burden-sharing that serves as a model for all of America's partners," and emphasized, "True burden-sharing is the foundation of a resilient alliance and is essential for effectively deterring our regional adversaries."

그러면서 헤그세스 장관은 "그것은 미국의 모든 파트너가 본받을 만한 동맹 차원의 부담 분담을 보여준다"고 평가하고, "진정한 부담 분담은 회복력 있는 동맹의 기반이며, 우리의 지역 적대세력을 효과적으로 억제하는 데 필수적"이라고 강조했다.

Subsequently, in his opening remarks today, Minister Ahn Gyu-back characterized the meeting as "a valuable opportunity to assess the joint statement issued by the leaders of both nations last year as well as the outcomes of the 57th ROK-U.S. Security Consultative Meeting and to engage in dialogue regarding the future direction of the alliance."

이어 안규백 장관은 이날 모두발언에서 "이번 회담은 작년 양국 정상 간의 공동 성명서와 57차 한미 안보협의회의 성과를 평가하고 앞으로 동맹이 나가야 할 방향에 대해 소통하는 소중한 기회"라고 평가했다.

Minister Ahn Gyu-back continued, stating, "I highly commend Secretary Hegseth for further strengthening the U.S. military already the most powerful in the world since taking office by restoring the warrior spirit of American forces under the banner of 'Peace Through Strength." He further emphasized, "In step with these efforts, we, too, are doing our utmost to secure core defense capabilities including through increased defense spending and to realize a defense of the Korean Peninsula led by our own nation."

안규백 장관은 "헤그세스 장관 취임 후 지금까지 힘을 통한 평화라는 기치 아래 미군의 전사 정신을 회복함으로써 세계 최강인 미국을 더욱 강력한 군대로 발전시킨 것에 대해 높이 평가한다"면서 "우리도 이에 발맞춰 국방비 증액 등을 통해 핵심 국방 역량을 확보하고 우리 주도의 한반도 방위를 실현할 수 있도록 최선의 노력을 다하고 있다"고 강조했다.

Meanwhile, against the backdrop of the U.S. implementing a counter-blockade to safeguard freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, it has been revealed that a South Korean vessel the *HMM Namu* was attacked within the strait; consequently, reports suggest that discussions regarding a response to this incident, in one form or another, have taken place.

한편 미국이 호르무즈해협의 자유를 위해 역봉쇄를 취하고 있는 등 호르무즈 해협에서 한국선박('HMM 나무호)가 피격당한 것으로 밝혀져 어떤형태로든 이에 대한 대응 논의가 있었던 것으로 알려졌다.

It is no exaggeration to say that Korea’s destiny lies in the hands of its ally, the United States. Is this not precisely the moment when an airtight ROK-U.S. alliance is desperately needed? (End)
