President Trump: “I love South Korea.”_ This is not a non-sequitur. The Korean government must deeply heed the significance of these words!

[트럼프 대통령, “나는 한국을 사랑한다.”_ '동문서답' 아니다. 한국정부 이 말의 의미 깊이 있게 새겨 들어야 한다!”]

"Iran’s attack on a South Korean vessel could serve as a warning signal that the safety of South Korean ships cannot be guaranteed should South Korea participate in the U.S.-led "Project Freedom."

[이란이 한국선박을 피격한것은,  한국이 미국 주도의 ‘프로젝트 프리덤(Project Freedom)’에 참여할 경우 한국 선박의 안전을 보장할 수 없다는 경고의 신호에 해당할 수 있다.]

Following President Trump’s social media post on the 4th (local time) in which he claimed that a South Korean vessel (a cargo ship belonging to HMM) had been attacked by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz the South Korean government has maintained the position that the ship was not, in fact, attacked by Iran. Amidst this situation, Secretary of War Hegseth stated during a U.S. Department of Defense briefing that the U.S. is currently conducting "Operation Project Freedom" to provide support in the Strait of Hormuz, and while noting that the U.S. would like South Korea to step forward regarding this incident he indirectly expressed a desire for South Korea's participation in the operation.

한국 선박(HMM 소속 화물선 )이 호르무즈해협에서 이란에 의해 피격됐다는 트럼프 대통령의 지난 4일(현지시간) SNS 발언이후 한국정부는 이란에 의해 피격된게 아니라는 입장을 보이고 있는 가운데 헤그세스 전쟁부장관도 미 국방부 브리핑에서 “한국이 이 사건에 나서 달라면서 미국이 호르무즈해협 지원을 위해 프로젝트 프리덤 작전을 진행하고 있는데 한국의 참여를 우회적으로 원한다고 밝혔다.

Even if its vessel were attacked by a country other than Iran, it is only natural that its own government South Korea’s should take an active interest in resolving the matter.

설령 자국 선박이 이란이 아닌 다른 국가로부터 공격을 받았다 하더라도, 자국 정부인 한국 정부가 문제 해결에 적극적인 관심을 기울이는 것은 지극히 당연한 일이다.

트럼프 대통령은 8일(현지시간) 백악관 사우스론에서 마린원에 탑승하기 전 대기하고 있던 기자들에게 다가와 질의응답을 가졌다.

I(Janne Pak) asked President Trump, “You mentioned that a South Korean vessel was attacked by Iran, yet Iran denies this. What is your stance on the matter?”

나(제니 박)는 트럼프 대통령에게 “한국선박이 이란에 의해 피격됐다고 대통령님(트럼프 대통령)이 언급했는데 대해, 이란은 이를 부인하고 있다. 이에 대한 귀하의 입장이 무엇이냐?" 고 질문했다.

President Trump replied, “I love South Korea.”

트럼프 대통령은, “나는 한국을 사랑합니다.”고 답변했다.

The meaning behind President Trump’s expressions of “love” and “liking” can be interpreted in various ways.

트럼프 대통령의 사랑한다, 좋아한다는 말 뜻에 대한 의미는 여러가지로 해석할 수 있다.

What President Trump loves and favors is not a country's government, but its citizens. If he determines that a government is anti-American or acts against U.S. national interests, he unhesitatingly ensures that it pays a commensurate price.

트럼프 대통령이 사랑하고 좋아하는 것은 그나라 정부가 아니고 시민이다. 그 나라 정부가 반미정부 및 미국 국익에 대응한다고 판단되면 과감하게 그에 상응한 대가를 지불하도록 만들어 버린다.

President Trump’s brief response on this day can be analyzed from several angles: First, it may be interpreted as a rebuttal to the current South Korean government’s skepticism regarding his earlier assertion that South Korea had been targeted by Iran. Furthermore, it could convey a profound sentiment namely, that regardless of what the South Korean government may say or do, he personally holds a deep affection for South Korea and its people. While South Korea’s legacy media outlets have characterized this simple remark by President Trump as a "non-sequitur," its true significance warrants much deeper reflection.

이날 트럼프 대통령이 내놓은 짧은 답변은 여러 각도에서 분석해 볼 수 있다.  첫째, 이는 한국이 이란의 공격 표적이 되었다는 자신의 앞선 주장에 대해 현 한국 정부가 회의적인 반응을 보인 데 대한 반박으로 해석될 수 있다. 나아가 이는 한국 정부가 어떤 말을 하거나 어떤 행동을 취하든 상관없이, 자신은 개인적으로 한국과 한국 국민에 대해 깊은 애정을 품고 있다는 심오한 메시지를 담고 있을 수도 있다. 한국의 기성 언론 매체들은 트럼프 대통령의 이 단순한 발언을 두고 ‘맥락에 맞지 않는 뜬금없는 소리, 동문서답(non-sequitur)’라고 규정했지만, 그 진정한 의미는 훨씬 더 깊이 있는 성찰을 요한다.

Secondly, this conveys a sense of disappointment that just hours before the launch of Operation Project Freedom while our ally, the United States, has rightly condemned Iran’s act of aggression against a South Korean vessel, the South Korean government itself the very party that should be most concerned appears to be blindly accepting the Iranian government’s claim that "the South Korean vessel (the *Nammu-ho*) was not attacked by Iran."

둘째로, 이는 ‘자유(해방) 작전,(Operation Project Freedom)’의 개시를 불과 몇 시간 앞둔 시점에, 우리의 동맹국인 미국은 이란의 한국 선박에 대한 침략 행위를 마땅히 규탄했음에도 불구하고, 정작 당사자로서 가장 깊은 우려를 표명해야 할 한국 정부 스스로는 “해당 한국 선박(‘남무호’)이 이란의 공격을 받지 않았다”는 이란 정부의 주장을 맹목적으로 수용하는 듯한 모습을 보이고 있다는 점에서 실망감을 자아냈다.

한편, 이란 정부의 공식 입장과는 대조적으로, 한국 선박 피격 사건에 대한 책임을 자처하는 이란 언론의 보도들은 일종의 ‘본보기 공격’ 즉, 한국이 미국 주도의 ‘프로젝트 프리덤(Project Freedom)’에 참여할 경우 한국 선박의 안전을 보장할 수 없다는 경고의 신호에 해당할 수 있다.

*Despite the fact established by the testimony of the *Nammu-ho* crew members regarding a loud, strange noise caused by an external impact that such a massive sound could not have resulted merely from an internal fire, the erratic nature of the South Korean government's investigation is only serving to heighten the suspicion surrounding this incident.

나무호 선원들이 외부충격에 의한 괴음이 들렸다고 증언하는 등 단순히 내부의 화재로 큰 괴음이 들릴일이 없다는것을 알았음에도 불구하고 오락가락한 한국정부의 조사가 이사건을 더욱 의심스럽게 증폭시키고 있다.

The Iranian government’s insistence that it was not behind this incident which it had no choice but to make stems from a desire to avoid creating a negative impression on South Korea, particularly given that it recently received financial aid from the South Korean government.

이란 정부가 비록 불가피하게 저지를 수밖에 없었던 일이라 할지라도 이번 사건의 배후가 아니라고 굳이 주장하는 것은, 특히 최근 한국 정부로부터 재정 지원을 받았다는 점을 고려할 때 한국에 부정적인 인상을 남기는 것을 피하고자 하는 의도에서 비롯된 것이다.

Through the recent attack on the South Korean vessel (the *Namu-ho*), the duplicity of the Iranian government and media who are attempting to drive a wedge into the ROK-U.S. alliance has been starkly exposed.

이번 한국 선박(*나무호*)에 대한 피격 사태를 통해, 한미 동맹에 쐐기를 박으려 시도하는 이란 정부와 언론의 이중성이 적나라하게 드러나고 있다.

Precisely at times like this, the Korean government must maintain an even closer alliance with the United States. Currently, the entire world is in a state of paralysis due to war. In the event of a contingency on the Korean Peninsula, the United States remains our most indispensable ally a true blood ally. (End)
