Switzerland has drawn attention by announcing on the 7th (local time) that it is prepared to host peace negotiations between the United States and Iran.
Given that significant global negotiations such as past nuclear talks have frequently taken place in Geneva, Switzerland (as was the case with the second round of indirect nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran held there last February), the possibility of such a meeting occurring there again cannot be ruled out.
Melanie Gugelmann, spokesperson for the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded to TASS regarding the mention of Geneva as a potential venue for negotiations by stating, "Switzerland is always ready to offer its good offices."
She further added, "Switzerland is willing to support diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting peace," and noted that "the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is maintaining contact with all relevant parties."
Earlier, Axios reported on a one-page negotiation document involving the United States, Iran, and the mediating nation of Pakistan that would declare an end to hostilities and initiate a 30-day negotiation period regarding Iran's nuclear program and the lifting of U.S. sanctions against Iran. The outlet further reported that on the same day, speaking from the Oval Office at the White House, President Donald Trump addressed the negotiations with Iran by stating, "They want to negotiate," and added, "We have had very good conversations with Iran over the last 24 hours, and there is a high probability that we will reach an agreement."
However, Iran refuted these claims and fiercely denounced Axios, accusing it of publishing false reports. The Iranian Foreign Ministry declared that Iran would not simply go along with whatever the United States desires.
Same day, in a telephone interview with PBS, President Trump stated, "I believe there is a very high probability of reaching an agreement," suggesting that a deal could be reached prior to his scheduled talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the 14th and 15th.
On the other hand, it is also necessary to bear in mind that if Iran refuses to engage in negotiations, Operation Project Freedom could be reactivated.
Given the high likelihood that discussions will take place between the United States and Iran, attention is currently focused on the potential venue for peace negotiations; candidates being cited include Islamabad, Pakistan which has served as a mediator as well as Geneva, Switzerland, the site of previous nuclear talks. (End)
