On January 30th (local time), President Trump announced his nomination of Kevin Warsh as the next chairman of the Federal Reserve. Kevin Warsh, a former Federal Reserve governor, was previously considered for the position in 2017 but lost out to Jerome Powell.  Nine years later, he has finally been nominated by President Trump to head the Federal Reserve.

트럼프 대통령은 30일(현지시간) 연방준비제도(연준) 차기 의장에 케빈 워시를 지명 발표했다. 케빈 워시는 전 연방준비제도 이사였으며 2017년 연준의장 지명 당시 제롬 파월 의장에게 밀린 뒤 9년 만에 드디어 트럼프 대통령에 의해 의장으로 지명을 받게 됐다.

Warsh's strength lies in the extensive network of connections he has built in the financial and political sectors over several decades.

워시 지명자는 수십년에 걸쳐 금융권과 정계에 두터운 인맥을 구축하고 있었던 점이 그의 강점이다.

President Trump said of prospective Fed chairman Kevin Warsh, "I've known Kevin for a long time, and I have no doubt that he would be one of the great Fed chairmen, perhaps the best."

트럼프 대통령은 워시 차기 연준의장에 대해, “나는 케빈을 오랫동안 알고 지냈으며 그가 훌륭한 연준 의장 중 한 명이 될것이며, 아마 최고의 의장이 될 것으로 의심치 않는다.‘고 밝혔다.

Trump said, "Warsh is exceptionally well-prepared to lead the world’s most influential central bank, with a distinguished background including degrees from Stanford University and Harvard Law School, prior roles as a Morgan Stanley executive and top economic advisor to the Bush Administration, and service as the youngest-ever Federal Reserve Governor  where he helped steer the institution through the 2008 financial crisis."

트럼프 대통령은, "워시는 스탠퍼드 대학교와 하버드 로스쿨에서 학위를 받고, 모건 스탠리 임원과 부시 행정부의 최고 경제 고문을 역임했으며, 역대 최연소 연방준비제도 이사로 재직하며 2008년 금융 위기 당시 연준을 이끌었던 경력을 포함하여 탁월한 경력을 보유하고 있어 세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 중앙은행을 이끌기에 매우 적합한 인물이다."고 밝혔다.

Former Fed Governor Warsh was not initially considered a leading candidate among the four Federal Reserve nominees. The group of candidates included Wash, White House International Economic Advisor Hassett, current Fed Governor Christopher Waller, and Rick Rieder, Chief Investment Officer of BlackRock's fixed income division.

워시 전 이사가 처음부터 4명의 연준 후보들 가운데 유력한 후보로 점쳐진 것은 아니었다. 후보군은 워시 전 이사를 포함해 해싯 백악관 국제경제위원장, 크리스토퍼 월러 현 연준 이사, 릭 리더 블랙록 채권부문 최고투자책임자(CIO) 등 4명이었다.

In particular, Chairman Hassett was considered a strong contender for the next Federal Reserve chairman, with his chances of being nominated estimated at 80% on the betting platform Kalshi as recently as early last month, and he had long been attracting public attention as a leading candidate among the nominees.

특히 해싯 위원장은 지난달 초까지만 해도 베팅 플래폼 ‘칼시(Kalshi)’에서 지명될 가능성이 80%로 집계되었으며 후보들 가운데서 오랫동안 유력한 차기 연준 의장 후보로 세간에 주목을 받아 왔었다.

However, the fact that Chairman Hassett had an excessively close relationship with President Trump unfortunately acted as a weakness in the final selection process for the next Federal Reserve chairman. And the market assessment is that this led to former Fed Governor Warsh emerging as a strong contender from the end of last year.

하지만 해싯 위원장이 트럼프 대통령과 지나치게 가까운 관계를 맺고 있었다는 점은, 안타깝게도 차기 연준 의장 최종 지명 과정에서 오히려 약점으로 작용했다는 것이다. 그리고 시장에서는 지난해 말 부터는 워시 전 이사가 급부상을 하는 흐름르로 이어졌다는 평가다.

Meanwhile, it is reported that the fact that former director Warsh is someone who supports interest rate cuts also played a role in President Trump's final nomination.

한편, 워시 전 이사가 금리 인하를 지지하는 인사라는 점도 트럼프 대통령의 최종 지명에 한몫을 했다고 전해졌다.

The meeting between President Trump and former Director Wray on December 10 of last year is considered to have been decisive in the nomination process. (End)
