"National Guard member shot in Washington, D.C., in critical condition"

Two National Guard members were shot and left in critical condition near the White House in Washington, D.C., a day before Thanksgiving on the 26th. The perpetrator was also seriously injured and arrested, but the details of the crime remain unknown

26일 추수감사절을 하루 앞두고 워싱턴 DC 백악관 인근에서 주방위군 2명이 총을 맞아 중태에 빠졌다. 범인도 중상을 입고 검거 되었지만 아직 범행에 대해서는 알려지지 않고 있다.

“There was a clear intent to target the U.S. capital,” said Washington, D.C., U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro in a joint briefing with relevant agencies on the same day. The perpetrator is identified as 29-year old Ramanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who entered the country in September 2021.

제닌 피로 워싱턴 DC 검사장은 이날 관계기관과 합동 브리핑에서 “미국 수도를 표적으로 삼을 분명한 의도를 갖고 있었다.”며 범인은  아프가니스탄 국적의 남성으로 2021년 9월 입국한 라마눌라 라칸왈 (29세)로 알려졌다.

Rakanwal is also known to have collaborated with the CIA during the Afghanistan War, which is raising further alarm.

라칸왈은 아프가니스탄 전쟁당시 미 중앙정보국(CIA)에 협력한 이력도 있는것으로 파악되어 더욱 경종을 울리고 있다.

At approximately 2:15 p.m. the previous day, Lakanwal was hiding on a street corner about two blocks northwest of the White House when he opened fire on two National Guard soldiers with a Smith & Wesson revolver, a six round revolver. He fired again at one soldier who fell to the ground, and then fired several shots at another soldier.

라칸왈은 전날 오후 2시 15분쯤 백악관에서 북서쪽으로 약 두 블록 떨어진 거리의 모퉁이에 숨어 있다가 총 6발을 쏠 수 있는 회전식 연발 권총인 ’357 스미스앤드웨슨 리볼버’를 사용해 주방위군 2명을 향해 기습 발포했다. 먼저 총을 맞고 쓰러진 병사 1명에게 재차 발포했고, 다른 병사 1명에게도 여러 발 총을 쐈다.

The soldiers shot were Sarah Backstrom(20) and Andrew Wolf(24), deployed from West Virginia and on a law enforcement mission since August. They underwent surgery at a hospital but are reportedly still in critical condition. If the twe die, they could face first-degree murder charges, and Pirro stated, "We will hold these perpetrators accountable to the fullest extent of the law." Attoney General Pam Bondi also stated, "If anything happens to these individuals, we will do everything in our power to seek the death penalty.

총에 맞은 병사는 웨스트버지니아에서 파견돼 8월부터 치안 유지 임무를 수행하고 있던 사라 백스트롬(20)과 앤드루 울프(24)다. 병원에서 수술을 받았지만 여전히 위중한 상태로 알려졌다. 두 사람이 사망할 경우 1급 살인 혐의로 기소될 수 있는데, 피로는 “이 가해자에게 법률이 허용하는 최대한의 범위로 책임을 물을 것”이라고 했다. 팸 본디 법무장관도 “이들에게 무슨 일이 생기면 사형을 위해 모든 할 수 있는 일을 하겠다”고 했다.

Breaking news reports indicate that Sarah Backstrom(20) has just died. Another person remains in critical condition, and the future remains uncertain.

속보에 의하면 사라 백스트롬(20)이 방금 사망했다고 보도되었다.  1명도 위중상태이며 앞으로 어떤일이 일어날지 예상할수 없다.

FBI Director Patel described the crime as an "attack on federal law enforcement officers" and said that they were conducting a comprehansive investigation in cooperation with relevant agencies. Lakanwal was allowed to enter the United States in September 2021 during the Biden administration because he had a history of cooperating with the CIA while operating in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe stated on the same day that Lakanwal "worked for the U.S. government as a 'cooperating force', and the Washington Post(WP) reported, citing sources, that Lakanwal was a member of "Zero Unit", a counterterrorism unit organized by the CIA to kill members of the Taliban and Islamic State(IS). The CIA has officially denied any cooperation, but is known to have provided intelligence and logistical support to this unit.

파텔 연방수사국(FBI) 국장은 이번 범행을 ‘연방 법 집행관에 대한 공격’으로 규정하며 관계 기관과 함께 전방위적 수사를 벌이고 있다고 밝혔다. 라칸왈은 아프가니스탄 남부 도시인 칸다하르에서 활동하며 CIA에 협력한 이력이 있어 바이든 정부 때인 2021년 9월 미국 입국이 허용됐다.

존 랫클리프 CIA 국장은 이날 라칸왈이 “‘협력군’ 소속으로 미 정부를 위해 일했다”고 밝혔는데, 워싱턴포스트(WP)는 소식통을 인용해 라칸왈이 탈레반·이슬람 국가(IS) 구성원 사살을 위해 CIA가 조직한 대테러 부대 중 하나인 ‘제로 유닛’ 소속이었다고 보도했다. CIA는 협력 관계를 공식 부인하고 있지만 이 부대에 정보 및 후방 지원을 제공한 것으로 알려져 있다.

Afghan nationlas who entered the U.S. through the "Operation Ally Welcome" program were granted a two year temporary stay and then applied for asylum. ABC News reported that Lakanwal was one of 76,000 Afghan refugees brought to the U.S. by the Biden admininstration in 2021, and that he applied for asylum last year and was granted it in April of this year under the Trump administration.

‘동맹국 환영 작전’ 프로그램을 통해 미국에 들어온 아프가니스탄 국적자들은 2년 임시 체류를 하고 이후 망명 신청을 했는데, ABC 뉴스는 라칸왈이 바이든 정부가 2021년 미국으로 데려온 아프가니스탄 난민 7만6000명 중 한 명이고 지난해 망명을 신청해 트럼프 정부 때인 올해 4월 허가를 받았다고 전했다.

President Donald Trump is conderned that the Biden administration has indiscriminately accepted foreign nationals without proper background checks. Attorney General Piro said it was "too early to say" about Lakanwal's exact motive. Meanwhile, President Trump has been staying at Mar-a-Lago in Florida since the day before the Thanksgiving holiday and has been receiving real-time briefings on the incident.

도널드 트럼프 대통령은 바이든 정부가 신원 검증 등을 제대로 하지 않은 채 외국인을 무분별하게 받아들였다는 문제의식을 갖고 있다. 피로 검사장은 라칸왈의 정확한 범행 동기에 대해서는 “아직 말하기에는 이르다”고 했다. 한편 트럼프 대통령은 추수감사절 연휴를 맞아 전날부터 플로리다주 마러라고 머물면서 실시간 사건에 대해 브리핑을 받고 있다.

President Trump expressed outrage over the National Guard shooting on his Truth Social, even callin the shooter an "animal". He also sid the shooter will pay dearly for his actions.

트럼프 대통령은 본인의  Truth Social에 주방위군 총격사건에 대해 분노하면서, 총격범을 ‘동물’일라고 표현하기도 했다.  그러면서 총격범은 그 대가를 톡톡히 치를것이라고 언급했다.

We must show zero tolerance for terrorists who seek to harm the United States. We must pursue them to the end and eradicate them from their roots.(End)
