The Trump administration has yet to hold a foreign ministerial meeting or summit with South Korea. The ongoing turmoil in South Korea has also left the South Korea-US alliance in jeopardy.

트럼프 2기 행정부에서 한국과 아직 외교장관 회담 및 정상회담을 갖지 못했다. 지속적인 한국의 혼란상태가 유지되면서 한미동맹도 흔들리고 있는 상태다.

Today (the 31st, local time), Secretary of State Rubio and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun held their first official meeting at the State Department in Washington.

오늘(31일, 현지시간) 루비오 국무장관과 조현 한국 외교부장관이 워싱턴 국무부 청사에서 첫 공식회담을 가졌다.

At today's State Department Briefing, when I asked, "What topics will be discussed in the meeting between Secretary Rubio and the South Korean Foreign Minister?" the State Department's Principal Deputy Spokesperson Pigott said, "Because the meeting is ongoing, I will refrain from commenting." he added, "The U.S.-ROK alliance is a linchpin of peace in the region. And we're seeing a lot of engagement between the United States and South Korea. You saw that during the Secretary's visit to Malaysia, and we've seen it since then." he continued, "The full and comprehensive trade agreement that the President announced is driving that engagement, and I believe that's the latest development in the dialogue between the United States and South Korea."

국무성 Pigott 수석부대변인은 오늘 브리핑에서 “루비오장관과 한국 외교부 장관과의 회담에서 어떤 주제가 논의될 것이냐?”는 나의 질문에, “지금 회담이 진행중에 있기 때문에 제가 말씀드리는 것을 삼가겠다.”며 “한미 동맹이 이 지역 평화의 핵심 축이라는 사실입니다. 그리고 우리는 미국과 한국 사이에 많은 교류가 이루어지고 있음을 보고 있습니다. 장관님께서 말레이시아를 방문하셨을 때에도 그런 모습을 보셨고, 그 이후로도 계속 그렇게 해왔습니다.”고 말했다. 그러면서 “대통령이 발표한 완전하고 전면적인 무역 협정을 통해 이러한 교류가 이루어지고 있으며, 이것이 한미 간 대화에서 가장 최근의 현상이라고 생각합니다.”고 말했다.

A:(MR PIGOTT): So I’m not going to get ahead of that. If I’m correct, this is actually happening right now, so I don’t want to get ahead of conversations that are happening currently. What I can say – taking a step back – as I mentioned in my topper, the fact that our alliance with the ROK is the linchpin of peace in the region. And we are seeing a large amount of high engagement between the United States and the ROK.

We saw that when the Secretary went to Malaysia. We’ve seen that since then. We see this complete and total trade agreement that the President announced, and so we see all this engagement, and I think this is the latest element of that in terms of conversations between the United States and the ROK.

장관님께서 말레이시아를 방문하셨을 때에도 그런 모습을 보셨고, 그 이후로도 계속 그렇게 해왔습니다. 대통령이 발표한 완전하고 전면적인 무역 협정을 통해 이러한 교류가 이루어지고 있으며, 이것이 한미 간 대화에서 가장 최근의 현상이라고 생각합니다.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Republic of Korea (ROK) Foreign Minister Cho Hyun today in Washington. The Secretary and Foreign Minister underscored the unwavering strength of the U.S.-ROK Alliance, which has served as the linchpin of peace, security, and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and in the Indo-Pacific for more than 70 years. They expressed continued support for their mutual goal of strengthening the U.S.-ROK Alliance, including through our robust combined defense posture and the continued provision of extended deterrence to the ROK.

마르코 루비오 국무장관은 오늘 워싱턴에서 조현 대한민국 외교부 장관과 회동했습니다. 두 장관은 70년 넘게 한반도와 인도-태평양 지역의 평화, 안보, 그리고 번영의 핵심축 역할을 해 온 한미 동맹의 굳건한 힘을 강조했습니다. 두 장관은 굳건한 연합방위태세와 한국에 대한 확장억제력의 지속적 제공을 포함하여 한미 동맹 강화라는 공동의 목표에 대한 지속적인 지지를 표명했습니다.

Secretary Rubio and Foreign Minister Cho discussed efforts to advance the shared prosperity of the United States and the ROK, including by strengthening supply chains and collaborating on critical and emerging technologies, among other efforts. They both welcomed the announcement of a full and complete trade deal and the forthcoming visit of ROK President Lee Jae Myung to Washington.

루비오 국무장관과 조 장관은 공급망 강화, 핵심 신기술 협력 등 한미 공동 번영 증진을 위한 노력에 대해 논의했습니다. 양측은 완전하고 완전한 무역 협정 체결 발표와 이재명 한국 대통령의 워싱턴 방문을 환영했습니다.
