@President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy clash with each other, raising their voices in anger during a summit in the Oval Office of the White House on the 28th.(2-28-2025)

President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy held a summit at the White House on the 28th (local time). President Trump and President Zelenskyy had a friendly meeting at the beginning, but they exchanged shouts for the last 7 minutes, and the incident became more heated when Vice President Vance, who was standing next to them, joined in.

도널드 트럼프 미 대통령과 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령이 28일(현지시간) 백악관에서 정상회담을 가졌다. 트럼프 대통령과 젤렌스키 대통령은 초반에 화기애애하게 회담을 진행했지만 후반 7분간 서로가 고성이 오갔으며 옆에 있던 벤스 부통령이 합세하면서 사건은 더 격앙됐다.

During the summit held at the White House that day, President Trump and President Zelensky each demanded a quick ceasefire and security guarantees, and they faced off tensely. President Zelenskyy emphasized that security guarantees are important in a peace agreement, saying, “Putin is a murderer and an aggressor.”

트럼프 대통령과 젤렌스키 대통령은 이날 백악관에서 열린 정상회담에서 각각 조속한 휴전과 안전보장을 요구하며 팽팽하게 맞섰다. 젤렌스키 대통령은 “푸틴은 살인자이자 침략자”라며 평화협정에 안전보장 조치가 중요하다고 강조했다.

The first half-hour or so of friendly conversation and formalities were followed by a tense atmosphere when Vice President JD Vance chimed in, saying, “The path to peace and prosperity is probably through diplomacy.”

처음 한 30분 동안 서로 친절한 대화와 형식적인 절차가 있었지만, 부통령인 JD 밴스가 "평화와 번영의 길은 아마도 외교를 통해 찾을 수 있을 것"이라고 말을 거들면서 긴장이 고조되기 시작했다.

Zelenskyy then said, “JD, what do you mean by diplomacy? What do you mean by that?” and continued, referring to Russian aggression, including the failed 2019 ceasefire that preceded the full-scale invasion three years ago. “Nobody stopped him,” he said, referring to President Putin.

이에 젤렌스키는 "JD, 당신이 말하는 외교가 무엇입니까? 그게 무슨 뜻인가요?" 라고 말했다. 그리고 러시아의 공격성을 언급하며, 3년 전 전면 침공에 앞서 있었던 실패한 2019년 휴전을 포함해 말을 이어갔다. 그는 푸틴 대통령을 언급하며 "아무도 그를 막지 못했다"고 말했다.

The conversation then became noticeably tense, and Vance responded, “The kind of diplomacy that will end the destruction of your country.”

그러자 대화는 눈에 띄게 긴장감이 돌았고, 밴스 부통령은 "당신의 나라의 파괴를 종식시킬 그런 종류의 외교"라고 답했다.

JD Vance then accused Zelenskyy of being rude for publicly criticizing the situation in front of the American media.

이어 JD 밴스는 젤렌스키가 미국 언론 앞에서 상황을 공개적으로 비판한 것에 대해 무례하다고 비난했다.

Tensions with the Ukrainian leader have been high for the first time, with Vice President Vance defending Trump's war-ending strategy of opening up communications with Putin and calling for a swift ceasefire.

밴스 부통령은 푸틴과의 소통을 개시하고 신속한 휴전을 촉구하는 트럼프의 전쟁 종식 전략을 방어하며 처음으로 우크라이나 지도자와의 긴장이 고조됐다.

Vice President Vance snapped at Zelenskyy, saying, “You don’t appreciate the support the United States has provided so far.”

벤스 부통령은 젤레스키 에게 “당신은 미국이 지금까지 지원해 온데 대해 고마워 할줄 모른다”고 쏘아 부쳤다.

In response, President Trump pressured President Zelenskyy, saying, “If it weren’t for the support of the United States, you would have lost in two weeks,” and “You don’t have any cards.” He criticized, “You are now gambling with World War III.” This is an extension of the claim that the fact of Russia’s invasion is being downplayed and that Ukraine is responsible for starting the war.

이에 트럼프 대통령은 “미국의 지원이 없었더라면 2주 만에 졌을 것”이라며 “당신은 어떤 카드도 없다”고 젤렌스키 대통령을 압박했다. 그는 “당신은 지금 제3차 세계대전으로 도박을 하고 있다”고 비난했다. 러시아의 침략 사실을 희석하고 우크라이나에 전쟁 발발 책임이 있다는 주장의 연장선이다.

When President Zelenskyy also confronted the president and vice president without giving an inch of concession and said, “The United States should also be careful, because we don’t know what will happen in the future,” President Trump became enraged again and retorted, “It’s not your place to say whether the United States should be careful or not.”

젤렌스키 대통령도 한치의 양보없이 대통령과 부통령에 대들면서 “미국도 앞으로 어떻게 될줄 모르니 조심해야 한다.”고 말하자 트럼프 대통령은 다시 격분하며 “미국이 조심해야 할지 않할지는 당신이 말 할위치가 아니다.”고 반박했다.

Zelenskyy's arbitrary remarks have further angered the United States. Zelensky would have been better off not saying these words directly in front of President Trump.

젤렌스키의 독단적 발언이 미국을 더 화나게 만들었다. 젤렌스키는 이런 말을 트럼프 대통령앞에서 직격탄으로 말하지 안했으면 나을뻔했다.

Zelenskyy was also pointed out by reporters that he wore a military uniform instead of a suit whenever he came to the White House for a summit. This is not the proper attire for a summit.

젤렌스키는 백악관에 정상회담에 올때마다 정장이 아닌 군복을 입고 나타난것도 기자에게 지적당했다. 정상회담에서 정상의 복장이 아니다는 것이다.

The two leaders were scheduled to sign an agreement on the development and investment of Ukraine’s mineral resources, but the meeting fell through. The luncheon and joint press conference were also canceled. President Trump posted on TruthSocial, saying, “Come back when you are ready for peace.”

두 정상은 우크라이나 광물자원 개발·투자에 관한 협정에 서명할 예정이었으나 회담 파행으로 무산됐다. 오찬과 공동기자회견도 취소됐다. 트럼프 대통령은 트루스소셜에 글을 올려 “평화를 위한 준비가 됐을 때 다시 오라”고 했다.

President Zelenskyy is in a tight spot. His plan to accept the minerals deal as the United States demands and then get security guarantees has been dashed. The Washington Post reported that the United States is even considering suspending all military aid shipments to Ukraine.

젤렌스키 대통령은 궁지에 몰렸다. 미국의 요구대로 광물협정을 수용한 뒤 안전보장을 얻어내려던 구상이 물거품이 됐다. 워싱턴포스트는 미국이 우크라이나에 대한 모든 군사 원조 물자 수송을 중단하는 방안까지 고려하고 있다고 보도했다.

The Trump camp even raised the issue of ‘replacing Zelenskyy.’ Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said, “Either Zelenskyy should step down or we should send someone else who can do business with us.”

트럼프 진영에서는 ‘젤렌스키 교체론’까지 대두했다. 린지 그레이엄 공화당 상원의원은 “젤렌스키가 물러나거나 아니면 우리와 비즈니스를 할 수 있는 다른 이를 보내야 할 것”이라고 말했다.

There are also concerns that the initiative in the peace talks could shift to Russia after the US-Ukraine summit ended in failure. In particular, if US security support for Ukraine is drastically reduced, President Putin may launch an all-out offensive to further expand the occupied territory. Contrary to President Trump’s plan for an early end to the war, there is a possibility that the war could be prolonged.

미국과 우크라이나의 정상회담이 파국으로 끝난 이후 종전 협상의 주도권이 러시아로 넘어갈 수 있다는 우려의 관측도 나오고 있다. 특히 미국의 우크라이나 안보 지원이 급감할 경우 푸틴 대통령이 점령 영토를 더욱 늘리고자 총공세를 벌일 가능성도 있다. 트럼프 대통령의 조기 종전 구상과 달리 오히려 전쟁이 장기화할 소지도 있는 것이다.

The New York Times quoted a senior European official as saying, “What President Trump wants is normalization of relations with Russia,” and “It has become clear that Trump views Ukraine as an obstacle.”

뉴욕타임스는 유럽의 한 고위 당국자 말을 인용해 “트럼프 대통령이 바라는 것은 러시아와의 관계 정상화”라면서 “트럼프가 우크라이나를 걸림돌로 여기고 있다는 점이 분명해졌다”고 지적했다.

The U.S.-Ukraine minerals agreement, which President Trump had touted as the first step toward a ceasefire, has been reverted to its original state. There are also concerns that Russian President Vladimir Putin may now have a more advantageous position in future ceasefire negotiations.

트럼프 대통령이 휴전의 첫 관문으로 내세웠던 미·우크라이나 광물협정은 원점으로 돌아갔다. 향후 종전 협상에서 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 대통령이 더욱 유리한 고지를 점하게 된 것 아니냐는 우려스런 관측도 나오고 있다.

President Zelenskyy has taken steps to resolve the situation, stating his intention to restore relations with the United States, saying, “We were able to survive thanks to the support of the United States.” He is also requesting full support from European countries.

젤렌스키 대통령은 “미국의 지원 덕분에 우리가 살아남을 수 있었다”면서 미국과의 관계 회복 의사를 밝히는 등 사태 수습에 나섰다. 유럽국가의 전폭적인 지원도 요청하고 있다.

In fact, it is no exaggeration to say that the outcome of the war is in the hands of the United States. If the support of the United States is cut off, Ukraine will not be able to continue the war. Of course, even if the European Countries helps, it will reach its limit.

사실 전쟁의 승패는 미국손에 달려있다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 미국의 지원이 끊기면 우크라이나가 전쟁을 이어나갈수 없기 때문이다. 물론 유럽국가들이 도운다해도 한계에 도달할 것이다.

Regarding the recent clash between President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, there are two opposing views: those sympathizing with Ukraine and those arguing that the United States made the right and bold decision.

이번 트럼프 대통령과 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령의 충돌을 놓고 우크라이나를 동정하는 쪽과 미국이 과감하게 옳은 결정을 내렸다는 두갈래 오피니언들이 팽배하게 드러나고 있다.(끝)
