“At the 77th anniversary of the founding of the North Korean People's Army, North Korea's Kim Jong-un ordered 'further strengthening of nuclear forces' and pointed out that the United States was behind the conflict. In this situation, it is questionable whether North Korea's complete denuclearization will ever be achieved.”

@President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba are holding a joint press conference in the East Room of the White House after the summit.

President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru held a summit meeting at the White House on the 7th (local time). After the meeting, the two leaders held a joint press conference in the East Room.

At this US-Japan summit, the trilateral security cooperation system between Korea, the US and Japan, improvement of relations with North Korea, and the US trade deficit and tariffs with Japan were discussed.

In particular, in a joint statement issued after the results of the meeting, it was said that “the two leaders expressed serious concerns about North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs and the need for a solution, and reaffirmed their firm commitment to the complete denuclearization of North Korea.”

President Trump, who met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un three times during his first term in office, called North Korea a “nuclear power” on the day of his inauguration on the 20th of last month, sparking controversy regarding whether North Korea is willing to denuclearize. President Trump also said, “Wouldn’t it be good to get along with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, who has nuclear weapons?”

As a result, won't the United States tolerate North Korea's nuclear weapons among its non-nuclear allies? There were also concerns that North Korea might be recognized as a nuclear state.

This is the first time since the inauguration of the second Trump administration that ‘complete denuclearization of North Korea’ has been included in an official diplomatic document involving the United States, and it is fortunate that North Korea’s denuclearization has been reaffirmed.

President Trump held a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba after the summit that day, He reaffirmed his will to normalize relations with North Korea's Kim Jong-un. "We're going to have a relationship with North Korea and Kim Jong-un," Trump said. "I got along very well with them, and we prevented a war," he said, adding that a good relationship with North Korea and Chairman Kim was "a very big asset to everyone."

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba said he would cooperate with President Trump in improving relations with North Korea and would raise the issue of North Korea's denuclearization and abduction of Japanese nationals.

President Trump also made it clear that he would continue the trilateral security cooperation system between Korea, the United States, and Japan, which is considered one of the former Biden administration's greatest achievements in the field of foreign affairs and security.

The joint statement said, “The United States and Japan confirmed the importance of the U.S.-South Korea-Japan trilateral partnership in responding to North Korea and protecting regional peace and prosperity.”

This clearly indicates the trilateral cooperation system between Korea, the United States, and Japan as cooperation to deter the threat from North Korea and keep China in check.

President Trump said, “We will achieve ‘peace through strength’ throughout the Indo-Pacific,” and added, “To that end, we will devote ourselves to the efforts to ensure safety and stability on the Korean Peninsula that began during my first term in office.”

In addition, as part of “cooperation to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific,” it was decided to promote multi-level cooperation between the Quad (security consultative body of the United States, Japan, Australia, and India) and countries with similar positions, including Korea, the United States, Japan, the United States, Japan, Australia, the United States, Japan, and the Philippines.”

In this US-Japan joint statement, Japan stipulated ‘strengthening defense capabilities after fiscal year 2027’, effectively promising the US a further increase in defense spending. And Japan promised to double its defense spending.

At a press conference that day, President Trump said that the United States is recording a trade deficit of over $100 billion (approximately 146 trillion won) in trade with Japan, and that he would quickly resolve the trade imbalance between the United States and Japan, saying, "We will resolve that very quickly."

Prime Minister Ishiba pledged to expand investment in the United States and import energy as a conciliatory card to reduce President Trump's imposition of tariffs and pressure to increase defense spending.

Meanwhile, NYT points out that President Trump mentioned tariffs in his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba and announced that he would quickly resolve the trade imbalance between the U.S. and Japan, and that Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba showed an artistic flattering attitude to please President Trump in order to avoid high tariffs.
