North Korea had remained silent about the chaotic situation in South Korea, but on the 6th (Korean time), it finally launched a new hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile, and Kim Jong-un announced that the missile was targeting U.S. territory (Guam).

The Pentagon said it was aware of North Korea's ballistic missile launch and condemned the North's provocative actions, urging it to stop further illegal actions, and that it was cooperating closely with its allies.

The Pentagon said the latest North Korean ballistic missile launch violates UN Security Council resolutions and is being taken seriously.

In a briefing today (the 8th), Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh responded to my question, “What is the U.S. reaction to North Korea’s launch of a hypersonic ballistic missile on the 6th and Kim Jong-un’s statement that it would target Guam, a U.S. territory?”

*Meanwhile, on the 8th, the UN Security Council convened a meeting and condemned North Korea's ballistic missile launch, but China and Russia still took North Korea's side. Ambassador Kim Song of the North Korean mission to the UN made a statement justifying the missile provocation by claiming that the missile launch was a legitimate act of a sovereign state, which drew strong rejection from neighboring countries.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff is placing weight on deceptive propaganda, saying that North Korea's claims of launching a new hypersonic ballistic missile are likely exaggerated. The United States is also only stating that it is currently analyzing the claims.

What is the Pentagon's reaction on this?

We condemn these actions, and we would continue to urge the DPRK from further unlawful and destabilizing acts. We've seen this type of behavior before and while we don't assess that it presents a threat to US forces, we're going to continue to monitor the situation.

He is ultimately the one that is going to have to decide, you know, how this work comes to a conclusion. That's not for us to dictate and that's not for us to dictate those terms. What we are doing as the United States and as the Department of Defense is what the Secretary has done since April 2022, which is convened the UDCG and bring together partners and different coalitions to help Ukraine with what it needs both in the short term and the long term in — in its battlefield requirements. So that's what you're going to see convene tomorrow. I'll leave it at that.
