@On the 6th (Korean time), North Korea launched a new hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile from the Pyongyang area into the East Coast.

North Korea, which had been silent while watching the chaos in South Korea, finally launched a new type of hypersonic medium- to long-range ballistic missile. It is not surprising that North Korea was waiting for an opportunity to provoke during the chaos, but the current security situation in South Korea is concerning.

그동안 한국의 혼란정국을 보면서 침묵하고 있던 북한이 드디어 신형 초음속 중장거리 탄도미사일을 발사했다. 혼란을 틈타 도발할 기회를 노리고 있던 북한의 미사일 도발이 그리 놀랍지는 않지만 작금의 한국 안보상황이 우려된다.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on the 6th (Korean time) that North Korea fired a ballistic missile from the Pyongyang area into the East Sea, and that the missile flew about 1,100 km before landing in the East Sea.

한국 합동참모본부는 6일(한국시간) 북한이 평양 일대에서 동해상으로 탄도미사일 1발을 발사했으며, 이 미사일은 1100여㎞를 비행한 뒤 동해상에 탄착했다고 보도했다.

North Korea's ballistic missile launch is the first in two months since the launch of a short-range ballistic missile (600mm large-caliber multiple rocket launcher) on November 5th of last year, and the first in two months since the election of US President Donald Trump (November 6th).

북한의 탄도 미사일 발사는 지난해 11월5일 단거리탄도미사일(600㎜ 대구경 방사포) 발사 이후 두달여 만이자, 도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령 당선(11월6일) 이후 2개월만에 처음이다.

North Korea's Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim Jong-un observed the test launch of a new type of hypersonic medium- to long-range ballistic missile via video and said, "It can effectively penetrate any solid defense barrier and inflict a serious military blow on the enemy."

북한 조선중앙통신은 김정은이 이번 신형 극초음속 중장거리 탄도미사일 시험발사를 화상으로 참관하고 “그 어떤 단단한 방어장벽도 효과적으로 뚫고 상대(적)에게 심대한 군사적 타격을 가할 수 있다.”고 말했다,“고 보도했다.

Kim Jong-un said, “The fundamental purpose of developing a new type of hypersonic missile is to continuously enhance the country’s nuclear war deterrence by establishing a weapon system that no one can counter as the core axis of strategic deterrence.”

김정은은 “신형 극초음속 미사일 개발의 기본 목적은 누구도 대응할 수 없는 무기체계를 전략적 억제의 핵심축에 세워 나라의 핵전쟁 억제력을 계속 고도화하자는 데 있다”고 밝혔다.

Kim Jong-un claimed that he has the ability to evade the U.S. missile interception network. The range of medium-range missiles is 300 to 5,500 km, so if they are not launched by reducing the flight distance, U.S. territory Guam, where B-52 bombers are deployed, will be within striking range.

김정은은 미국의 미사일 요격망을 회피할 능력을 갖췄다고 주장했다. 중거리미사일의 사거리는 300~5500㎞여서 비행거리를 줄여 발사하지 않을 경우 ‘비(B)-52 폭격기’ 등이 배치된 미국령 괌 등이 타격권에 들어간다.

North Korea’s Rodong Sinmun reported that “the missile, launched by the North’s Missile General Bureau in a northeasterly direction from a launch pad on the outskirts of Pyongyang, flew at a speed 12 times the speed of sound, reaching a first peak altitude of 99.8 km and a second peak altitude of 42.5 km, and accurately landed in a virtual target area in the open sea within 1,500 km of the boundary line.” The test launch was reportedly supervised by Jang Chang-ha, director of the Missile General Bureau.

북한 노동신문은 “북한 미사일 총국에 의해 평양시 교외의 발사장에서 동북 방향으로 발사된 미사일이 음속의 12배 속도로 1차 정점고도 99.8㎞, 2차 정점고도 42.5㎞를 찍으며 비행해 1500㎞ 계선의 공해상 목표 가상 수역에 정확히 탄착했다”고 보도했다. 시험발사는 장창하 미사일총국장이 지도했다고 전했다.

The Rodong Sinmun also reported that “new carbon fiber composite materials were used in the production of the engine body of the new hypersonic missile, and a new comprehensive and effective method based on already accumulated technologies was introduced for the flight and guidance control system.” It added that “the test of the new strategic weapon system is part of the national defense force development plan aimed at enhancing the sustainability and effectiveness of strategic deterrence against potential adversaries.”

노동신문은 또한 “신형 극초음속 미사일의 발동기(엔진) 동체 제작에는 새로운 탄소섬유복합재료가, 비행 및 유도 조종체계에는 이미 축적된 기술들에 도대한 새로운 종합적이며 효과적인 방식이 도입됐다”고 보도했다. 이어 “새로운 전략무기체계의 시험은 잠재적인 적수들에 대한 전략적 억제의 지속성과 효과성을 제고해나가기 위한 국방력 발전 계획 사업의 일환”이라고 덧붙였다.(끝)
